Research suggests that a number line is not appropriate for PreK-1st grade when learning math. Instead they recommend the use of a Number Path. This number path has 1-20 with the color changing every five to emphasize the benchmarks of 5 and 10. This document is meant to be printed on 11x17 paper. You can laminate each individual number path and tape to students' desks to use just like they would have used a number line.
This math game board has the numbers 1-20 on the lily pads. Having the numbers along the path helps children see the numbers get larger as they go further along the path. You can use this game board in a math center or print it on larger banner paper to have a giant game board! You can use regular dice or try creating your own dice with +0, +1, +2 to help develop young learner's number sense. The lily pads (and dock) for 5, 10, 15, and 20 are larger to emphasize the importance of those bench

The ability to subitize (or instantly recognize without counting) is an important part of early numeracy. These dominoes were designed with dot patterns that enable students to subitize the large amounts on dominoes by organizing the dots into "five and some more." In traditional dominoes, children end up counting to determine the number on large sets because the dots are not organized in a manner enabling children to subitize. By organizing them around the fives, children are able to know a
Looking for a quick, easy activity for when you have just a few spare minutes? Subitizing activities are a perfect solution and why not do them with fun pictures instead of just dots on a card. This set includes the numbers 1-10 using dot patterns with Thanksgiving Turkeys as the "dots" and 0-10 using the Turkeys inside of ten frames.

When you first start using subitizing cards children will want to count each object individually, but the goal is to encourage them to see the entire amount without counting. The larger sets are specifically designed to help kids see the smaller sets within and combine them to create the larger set. Even in the smaller sets some configurations are easier for children to subitize than others. For instance, my so

Place Value Cards allow children to see the value of each digit within a number. The small numbers in the upper left-hand corners of the cards shows the expanded notation to remind children that the “3” is really worth a “30.” The back of each card shows the Rekenrek's (aka MathRack) visual representation of each number, to help children build spatial relationships for numbers. A set contains one card each of the numbers 1-9, the decade numbers (10, 20, 30…), and a 100 card. This allows chil
A fun and easy activity to help your children practice subitizing and counting. They roll a die and place that many counters or pompoms into their picture. Certain pictures are designed to help children see amounts without having to count one-by-one (subitize).
Wondering how to build a Rekenrek? Rekenreks are a hands-on manipulative that was created in the Netherlands to develop number sense and build fact fluency. The translated name to the U.S. has taken on many variations and is sometimes known as a MathRack, Counting Frame, or Arithmetic Rack. This document gives a brief description of some activities you can do using a Rekenrek along with the directions on how I make my homemade version.
This ten frame is designed to print on card stock and then laminate. Then as children are working with manipulatives when solving math problems, they can place them right in their ten frame place mat.
Looking for a fun game that your students will beg to play? 10/20/30 is a great way to sneak in practice with addition and subtraction facts while also helping your students get to friendly numbers like 10, 20, and 30. All you need for this game is a deck of playing cards and the directions.
This is a one page document for you to print off and send home with students to encourage the practice of math ideas during the Holiday/Christmas Break. Suggestions of games, websites, and apps are given for K-2 and 3rd-5th.
This is a one page document that you can print and send home with your students to give them and their parents a few ideas on mathematical activities they can do over the holiday break without having to sit down and do worksheets. Encourage your families to bring mathematics in through traditional and online games.

Experience
I am a former middle school teacher, but now do trainings for teachers. For the past 4 years my focus has been on how children learn mathematics from PreK-3rd grade.
Teaching style
I used to be a traditional teacher, but have transformed to more of a constructivist. I do believe students need to be able to perform procedures and know their facts, but they need the understanding behind it first.
Additional biographical information
I have three young kiddos (only 3 1/2 years between my oldest and youngest) and a wonderful husband, whom I have known since Kindergarten!
TPT is the largest marketplace for PreK-12 resources, powered by a community of educators.
