I have taught in the Middle East, Western New York state, and near Atlanta. In the Middle East I taught in all elementary grades to children from almost 100 different countries. In Western New York state I substituted in grades K-12. In Atlanta I've taught Social Studies subjects of Canada, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. My absolute most favorite subject to teach is reading comprehension (or Literature or Reading).
Miss AJ created this fun, engaging, eye-catching foldable based on the Frayer Model to conduct a character analysis. The paper is divided up into sections to accommodate the many different ways to analyze a character. There's also space used to describe the Protagonist and the Antagonist. Includes descriptions of each character trait. I've included directions so teachers can guide gifted students to create their own foldable from scratch. There is a template. Just place your template on th
I've designed this unit to be used with differentiated instruction. Some worksheets could be used at a center. This thematic unit contains a card game similar to Old Maid (cards included for you to print multiple copies of) to reinforce the many characteristics of fairytales. During the card game students are using math skills by making a tally chart and bar graph. There are worksheets for coloring appropriate clip art that represents each characteristic, labeling, matching, word search, Venn
This 3 week long thematic unit plan is very engaging and doesn't require knowledge of basketball or even liking the game. Many examples are included in order to illustrate the day's lesson. Details for each day's lesson is included. A preplanning sheet is included so you can gather all materials ahead of time. Students will use math skills in a real-life setting and well as skills learned in other subject areas. It is cross-cirricular and uses multiple intelligences theory. Students will a
This game is designed for the whole class to play together in 2 teams, but it is QUIETLY played, believe it or not!! The motivation to remain quiet is two-fold: not helping each other with clues is why it's quiet and students will see clue cards under the wrong category and they'll be so excited or motivated to get their turn at placing a clue card under the correct genre category card. Instructions are included. There are 15 colorful cards with the name of a genre printed in large black le
This novel study packet includes definitions to hand out for Plot Analysis vocabulary, such as, protagonist, theme, rising action, etc. There are graphic organizers for teaching the plot, characterization, and descriptions (adjectives) of the bugs and two aunts. There is a foldable activity for learning how to figure out the theme of any novel. A printable template of a small 3-D box for an adjective activity. I've suggested two funny and engaging books to read to teach and motivate students
This ppt is meant as an introduction with 11 slides briefly describing the unique characteristics of fairytales with clip art to enhance the lesson. The ppt should be followed by my Characteristics of Fairytales Unit (sold separately as a pdf). Please note that the thumbnails in the preview show less than perfect text, but when I viewed the ppt it is perfect.
I've made 4 genre assessments that are coded "A", "B", "C", and "D". All 4 are the same test except the questions are not in the same order nor are the word banks in the same order. This way no two people sitting next to each other will have the same test and it prevents "wandering eyes". The format is a word bank followed by definitions. Each definition has a blank line next to it for the student to write the answer. Each word from the word bank should be used only once. Answer keys incl
This is a teacher's guide for the non-fiction book The Perilous Journey of the Donner Party. It includes how to characterize, Characterization for 3 main characters, a printable graphic organizer for each of the 3 main characters for students to fill out with descriptions. Also, includes definition of foreshadowing, examples from the book, and a printable graphic organizer for students to fill out, definition of irony and examples from the story, definition of conflict, external conflict, and
Tackylocks and the Three Bears by Helen Lester is the basis for these lessons. This is a fractured fairytale based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Page 15 has a poetic song. For under $5, I downloaded the book onto my Kindle for Windows 8. If you did this you could then connect your computer to a projector and everyone will be able to see every page clearly. In the lessons you will teach the whole class how to determine a rhyme scheme. After that you'll engage the whole class in an acti
Read aloud "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" by Peter Stevenson. Next, show the Character Education Powerpoint. There are 12 slides with clip art retelling all of Goldilocks' bad manners from the story. This can open up a discussion. The last 3 pages of the slide are directions for students' writing assignment, book ideas, and proofreading instructions.
This fun and engaging vocabulary review game is easy to play. Just print the cards on card stock and cut. Tell students ahead of time to study for this because it's going to be a competition between two teams. Offer the winning team a reward to help motivate them.
This Powerpoint is a brief introduction into the unique characteristics of each kind of story that make up the oral traditions genre. There are sound effects and links in some slides.
Suggested short books to read, interactive assignment, art project, quiz with answer key, and list of idioms for class discussion, answer key to meanings of list of idioms.
Aligned with 5th and 6tth grade Common Core Standards this Powerpoint allows you to project for the whole class a writing exercise that you choose. There are four writing exercises: Descriptive, Expository, Persuasive, and Narrative.
This is a set of ideas to stimulate creative writing in your class. There are 18 story cards and each card contains 6 words/phrases that must all be used in the student's story. Next, there are 16 story strips which contain thought-provoking questions that are relevant to their lives. Last, there are 16 photos to inspire thoughts and stir up memories to write about. There are 2 pictures on each page. So students have a bit of a choice. The teacher can choose one thing for all the students
42 colorful cards contain a photo each which matches with the collective animal name. Great for a center. Students can play "Go Fish" or "Concentration" in addition to choosing a card(s) and writing a sentence using the collective name.
This is not a tic-tac-toe game. This has nine squares laid out 3x3 like tic-tac-toe. Descriptions of projects (9 different ones) are detailed in each square. There is quite a variety of writing projects and art projects. Students choose 3 in-a-row up and down, or across, or diagonally. So that you can have more flexibility, I've included a duplicate copy of the tic-tac-toe paper but changed the title to "Fairytale Patchwork Quilt". On this one students still choose 3 squares, but ANY thre
A great vocabulary activity for the whole class played like baseball. Print and cut pages of the vocabulary cards included. Instructions on how to play are also included. Very easy to play and very engaging. A great way to review for a vocabulary test. Get the whole class excited the day before playing by telling them to study the genre terms because they're going to play baseball tomorrow and they'll want their team to win.
A multiple learning styles and cross-curricular 3X3 tic-tac-toe grid allows students to choose their own 3 final projects. Like the game, tic-tac-toe, they must choose three-in-a-row across, up and down, or diagonally. Includes art projects, such as, painting, doll making, poster making, construction paper, Powerpoint or some other technology the student is comfortable with, research and writing. Students should color in the 3 blocks to indicate their choices and hand in with the final 3 proj
