Need a short story that can be read in one period? Looking for an appropriate story to share with your kids for Halloween? Look no further......
A favorite for my 6th graders, this lesson is perfect for Halloween.
While you read the scary story "Family Dinner," play scary music to set the mood. The story is sure to engage students.
There are questions that follow, that most students will be eager to do after reading the story.
This is probably one of my favorite lessons to do with my kids.
Scary Halloween Story for (2 days or double block)
There are guided notes for 2 days, as well as pre reading, post reading, during reading activities, and an anticipatory guide.
The story is The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe
day 1 = point of view
day 2 = theme and answer the focus question
Scary Halloween lesson for "The Jigsaw Puzzle" by J.B. Stamper.
There is a do now, guided notes, guided practice, a demonstration of learning, stop and jot questions (to lead to theme), pre-reading, and then independent practice with the story where students find the theme and two pieces of evidence to support their theme.
The lesson is a little long (~60 minutes), but a lot can be cut out. The longest part will be reading the story.
I am planning on doing this lesson on Friday with my kids
Worksheet goes over finding theme in poetry. The packet features guided notes, and guided activities with several poems. Students will practice finding the theme with multiple poems! Answer key is not provided.
Here is a freebie of one of my favorite worksheets I made when I taught 6th grade reading so that you can see some of my work! Teach students all about poetic structure with this packet, where the teacher models a skills and then students practice it! Great for general poetry practice, and poetry units. I no longer have the answers to the guided notes, which is why I am providing this resource for free.
Using the Brown V. Board article, teach students how to respond to articles using sentence stems (perfect for LEP and SPED students, as well as struggling readers).
This lesson offers scaffolding for struggling students, but can easily be adapted to increase rigor. The worksheet also utilizes AVID strategies (3-2-1 Nonfiction)

Teaching style
I strive to give students and educators highly engaging lessons and guides that are easy to follow and increases in rigor as students progress through the lesson. I follow a gradual release model, which places the burden of learning onto students at the middle and end of the lesson cycle--after they've had enough support to master the concepts.
