About the store
I am a retired mechanical engineer who, upon retirement, became a middle and high school math and science teacher via the lateral entry process in NC. I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade math and science and 9-12 grade math (Math 1, 2 and 3, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and Precalculus) over the last 15 years.

Parabolic Roller Coaster Project

Created by
Priceless Math
The purpose of this project is to give your students a good understanding of the math and science behind real-world roller coasters. It will also provide them with a hands-on activity that is fun and interesting and gets them out of their seats. The project requires the students to have previously been taught the basics associated with quadratic functions (parabolas) in their math class as well as kinetic and potential energy in their science class. It cross connects math with science so it b

I use this MS PowerPoint presentation in my 8th grade Pre-Algebra and 9th grade Math I classes as part of our initial review of various basic math topics. It can also be used in science classes as proper unit conversion is a must for science. It utilizes a detailed, step-by-step process to convert and solve various dimensional or unit analysis problems. The presentation includes the detailed solution of 4 example dimensional / unit analysis problems. It is a totally animated ppt file and is

This MS Word document specifies the details of a project that involves the design and construction of six (6) wood circles that cover the basic phases of the cell cycle and mitosis. The following cycle and phases are covered: Overall Cell CycleProphaseMetaphaseAnaphaseTelophaseCytokinesisThe students use thin, sanded 4" wood circles to first sketch the phase details in pencil and then use color markers to draw over the preliminary design to finalize the details. I furnished the wood circles fo

The video and accompanying hard-copy document describe a real-world Math 2 / Algebra 2 project that is both educational and fun. It is a break from the boredom of math spreadsheets!! Yay!! This third project involves various calculations related to the pressure of the backup water supply system for my farm in the mountains of North Carolina. The backup water system originates with the rain water collection system (rain barrels) installed at the top of the property and ends at the main flower

Experience

I am a retired mechanical engineer who, upon retirement, became a middle and high school math and science teacher via the lateral entry process in NC. I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade math and science and 9-12 grade math (Math 1, 2 and 3, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and Precalculus) over the last 15 years.

Teaching style

I typically use a 4-prong approach to teaching math and science in my classroom: 1) 8 to 10 minute presentation (usually a ppt) to introduce and provide some basic instruction for a new math topic, 2) a guided notes paper with lots of blanks to be jointly completed by my students and me, 3) online or hard copy practice worksheets to reinforce the current concepts and confirm understanding and 4) multiple, relevant, hands-on projects to connect the various math and science subjects to the real world. I am a strong proponent of Project Based Learning (PBL) using STEM projects and lessons. I use my Smartboard and document camera daily during class. Note: I use all of the MS PPT products that I have listed on TpT website in my own classrooms.
