#Emoji Response to Reading

This quirky response to reading gets pre-teens and teenagers to interact with the text on a #thoughtful level. I used it with seniors who were reading Huck Finn and they got a kick out of it. You could hear them giggle as they thought of a particularly snazzy hashtaf. Even if the reading is dry, the hashtags #won'tbe. Enjoy!

THANKSgiving Thank You Letters

This lesson provides a mentor text and a prewriting activity to help students choose a person to write to. It then breaks down the process of writing a sincere, meaningful thank you letter for students including sentence starters. This is a one to two day lesson. (You may just have students finish the letter for homework and show it to you the next day rather than taking it to two days. I actually only use one day for it, and students usually finish their letters during my 45 minute class period

Irony Presentation and Activity to Complete with "The Andy Griffith Show"

The kids love the interactive, image-heavy presentation AND the old black and white show. They will laugh the whole lesson; they will totally understand all the forms of irony, and they will beg for more Andy Griffith! Please note that the episode of Andy Griffith appears to require a purchase of $1.99 to view (on IMDB.com). The presentation and notes are high-quality and can stand alone, but the $1.99 is probably worth it for an excellent opportunity for the class to look for the different type

She’s a valuable weapon and tool in a battle, and she doesn’t break easily. Katniss is as straight as an arrow; she’s brutally honest and she says exactly what she means. She makes impossible choices as quickly as an arrow zips through the air, and her words are as piercing as an arrow’s tip. Katniss has a softer side like an

My own education history

I taught at a preschool during college, and I ended up substituting for the Director for multiple months. After obtaining my Bachelor's in Elementary Education (EC-4) in 2008, I was a Certified Reading Tutor until I was recruited to teach Middle School Reading. After teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Reading for five years, I moved up to the high school level where I led the English Department and taught mostly English I and English I Pre-AP for another five years. In 2017, I obtained my Master's in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Texas in San Antonio. In 2019, I was promoted from the High School to Central Office, where I led curriculum and instruction as well as federal, state, and special programs (including ESL and GT) for my local school district. I have recently obtained Superintendent Certification. I still love nothing more than designing learning and spending every possible minute in the classroom. Being in the trenches with and supporting teachers, who I firmly believe are the backbone of what we do in the field of education, is the most important work I do.
