The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology revolves around the expression of genes into a workable protein. This activity will allow you to show how the genes present in an individual’s genotype can affect the phenotype. Genes are the units that determine inherited characteristics such as hair color and blood type. Genes are segments of DNA molecules that determine the structure of protein that our cells make. The sequence of nitrogen bases (“letters”) in the nucleotides determines the sequence of a
Looking for a way to engage your kinesthetic learners and visual learners? Think that the electron transport chain might be a topic that your student would rather avoid? Is cell respiration and the electron transport chain (ETC) a topic that your dread? Study of the electron transport chain of photosynthesis and cell respiration is an integral part of any biology class. Electron Transport Chains can be a complex topic, but they are also essential for understanding how photosynthesis and cellular
Our environment tends to remain constant so long as it is not disturbed. However, what happens when either a new habitat forms or a disturbance occurs? Ecological succession is nature’s attempt to make a habitat that is diversify or repair a damaged habitat. But what are the different types of succession?
Primary succession usually occurs after the formation of a new, unoccupied habitat. While, secondary succession usually occurs after the some form of disturbance to an existing community. A co

Macromolecules, or large carbon-based (organic) molecules, are one of the most fundamental ideas of biology. In the study of biology, monomers might include sugars (saccharides), amino acids, or nucleotides. The macromolecules include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. All of these macromolecules are made by a process of called dehydration synthesis. Dehydration synthesis is the removal of a water molecule to join two organic monomers together. This process is used to create pol
Looking for a way to engage your kinesthetic learners and visual learners? Think that the process of cell division might be a topic that your student would rather avoid or heard too many times? Is cell division (the cell cycle) or mitosis a topic that your dread? Study of mitosis and cell division are an integral part of any biology class. Short presentation to talk about science classroom lab safety. It includes funny pictures and abbreviated safety rules. Great to get the ball rolling at the beginning of the year (or whenever). Goes well with the note handouts also by similar names. Matches up with Next Generation Science Standards too.

The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology revolves around the expression of genes into a workable protein. This activity will allow you to see common misconceptions in traits that are often thought and taught to be single gene traits, but in fact are not; it will show you through the fun use of animals, true single gene traits, and it will involve interaction and pair sharing activities. Genes are the units that determine inherited characteristics such as hair color and blood type. Genes are segmen

Study of the organelles and structure of a cell, along with the membrane, are integral parts of any biology class. Having the students put the names of the major cell organelles (endoplasmic reticulum, cell membrane (plasma membrane), cell wall, cytoplasm (cytosol), Golgi apparatus (complex), mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes, nucleus, vacuole, and others) into their own words and demonstrate understanding of their functions through analogy, metaphor, or similes can be a fun, creative way to
Looking for a way to convert raw scores on homework, Biology FRQ’s, projects, or tests into an AP score with a meaningful percentage? Want to make sure that your students understand the needs of pacing and performance when it comes to the AP test at the end of the year? After opening the spreadsheet, all it takes is answering a few simple questions and you can convert raw score into an AP score along with a percentage. There is no need for understanding formulas. By using this spreadsheet, you
Is your voice worn out by the end of the day? Do you feel like it is hard to engage all students within the class? Looking for a way to make your class more student centered?
Having the students get up, talk to one another on task, collaborate together, and think critically can engage most students no matter what the level of ability. This activity has been used in both on-level classes and in more advanced classes (AP classes).

The scientific method is a systematic way to explore the cause of any phenomenon. It involves observation, questioning, hypothesizing, experimenting, collecting data, analysis, drawing conclusions, and sharing those conclusions by communication with peers. Hypothesizing is way to generate a possible explanation, create a model for predicting results, and create a description of how you intend on measuring that prediction. This activity walks students through the scientific method in a way that

Experience
I have taught university undergraduate chemistry lab, remedial reading comprehension at university, middle school science, physical science, integrated science, biology, honors biology, AP biology, and physics.
Teaching style
My favorite style of teaching is student groups and learning. I love lab experiences. I use a method of classroom discussion followed by group / seat work.
My own education history
I have a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, with minor in Biochemistry. I have a Master's in Secondary Education, specializing in Science Education. Beyond this, I have 30+ hours of additional classroom learning, which includes AP workshops on multiple continents, and professional development workshops / conferences on multiple continents and multiple countries.
Additional biographical information
I am well versed in the development of resources for students with English and a second (or third, or fourth) language. I have worked closely with Special Needs departments to develop note handouts and test questioning styles that will reach those needing accommodations. Find me on Facebook at Real Science Resources.
