Students can either make a stand alone representation or a poster, but the poster must be 3D, made with textures. In order for students to better understand the process of Experimental Design, they will watch, take notes and answer questions about a Mythbusters episode in which they test the individual ingredients of diet coke and mentos to determine what makes the reaction. Using that information, students will design their own experiment with different sodas that contain a different combination of the reactive ingredients. They will plan & set up their experiment using the experimental design format.

Students are planning an End of the Year Party for their class in which they have to purchase items for the party and determine which package/price gives the best unit rate all while staying on a budget. This activity can be given to individuals, pairs or groups to complete, or each pair could work through an item then come back as a large group to see if their total purchases keep them within budget. I came up this last year as a fun way to assess my students' understanding of vertical, adjacent, corresponding, supplementary, etc. angles. This project is for students to develop a kid friendly comic strip or book that illustrates the angles in math terms and shows where these angles can be found in every day life. There is also a requirement for application. My students did an awesome job with this. It's really great what they can come up with on their own.
