During my Math Workshop students visit two rotations per day that are designed around the Math CCSS for my grade level. My “Fact Fluency” station is from the Operations & Algebraic Thinking Domain. Activities and games for this station are fairly simple, repetitive, and fun, of course! My goal is for students to be able to work on their Fact Fluency in pairs or on their own without needing to interrupt my small group instruction for directions on the activity.

This packet was just created this past weekend after seeing my students' scores on the STAR Math test. One of their areas where they could improve was in their Place Value so I went to work starting with identifying digits in the Hundreds, Tens, and Ones Place of a 3-Digit Number. Success! Fact Fluency is so important for students in their foundational math skills. We use these at our Fact Fluency (based on the OA CCSS) rotation in our Math Workshop. Students take a fact family card (we have copied on construction paper and laminated) and are to generate their four number models (two addition and two subtraction) for that family of numbers. We practice Reading Fluency every day in our classroom by performing repeated One-Minute Readings of the same passage for the week. On Monday we mark (with a green marker) after the last work read in the minute and count the number of words read. Students practice their Fact Fluency and familiarity with Doubles by playing this Double Bump Game. This works on addends up to 6. You may use a plastic spinner placed on top of the spinner on the second page or instruct students to use a pencil and paper clip as a spinner. This game has been played in pairs and group of three in my classroom.

We concentrate on place value throughout the school year, but I have found this activity to be a favorite of my students.
