My teaching career started when I was 5 years old. I "taught" 4 invisible students in my "classroom" for hours upon hours in the summers. I have formally taught Math and Social Studies at the middle level for 7 years in 4 separate districts.
Looking for the perfect way to spiral review in your Math class? This resource is for you! Calendar Math uses the numbers in the date and day of school to introduce and reinforce 6th grade Common Core Math skills. This document was inspired by Stephanie Moorman's Calendar Math program for 4th and 5th graders. (http://teachinginroom6.blogspot.com/)
You may use this activity however you see best fit in your classroom. I use it as a warm-up that flows into station work. I would recommend modeling

This activity is the perfect way to connect March Madness with Math content. Students are given the statistics (2016-2017 season) for the top 10 men's NCAA basketball players in three forms: fractions, decimals, and percents. They will need to convert these numbers to a common form to answer their Research Questions. Students will then use their answers and the statistics to create their own 6-person team. I have also incorporated a reward component for the student who has the strongest tourname
This file includes all pre- and post- assessments you will need to teach 6th grade Math. Every Mastery Tracker has the matching I Can statements, pre-assessment, post-assessment, and mastery column. I have students complete the pre-assessment column at the beginning of the unit and the post-assessment column at the end. You can either fill in the mastery column or have your students do so. It is the perfect tool to assess student growth and track data.

This is a great inquiry exercise that requires students to use their computation skills (fractions, decimals, and whole numbers) to conclude the effects of multiplying and dividing by numbers between 0 and 1. The main purpose of this activity is to help students understand that multiplying doesn't always mean to get bigger; and dividing doesn't always mean to get smaller.
Students will work through 8 multiplication and division problems. They will then use this work to prove the effects of mul
This activity is an engaging way for students to practice fraction, decimal, and percent conversions. There are also questions that require the students to recall and apply ratio and percent problem-solving concepts. You can use this activity as a whole-class activity, partner work, or as an individual assignment.
Students solve 6th grade Common Core Number System problems to determine the latitude and longitude coordinates of Mr. Turkey. They will then use their atlas to find the specified location. Students will use the internet to determine the famous structure located in this location. This is the perfect mix of Math, Social Studies, and Thanksgiving!
Students will solve fraction multiplication problems (fraction by fraction, mixed number by fraction, and fraction by whole number). They will then check their work by solving the same problems, but this time with decimals. I use this activity to segue from multiplying decimals to multiplying fractions. There are multiple practice assignments and 2 sets of differentiated assessments. This activity also helps students to better understand fraction and decimal equivalencies.
Students will conduct research on an assigned ancient Egyptian god or goddess that appears in the book, "The Red Pyramid." The handout includes questions to guide the students' research.
***This is the pdf version of this assignment. If you would like the editable PowerPoint version, please message me!***
Students will solve three division problems (fraction by fraction, mixed number by fraction, and fraction by whole number). They will then check their work by solving the same problems, but this time with decimals. I use this activity to segue from dividing decimals to dividing fractions. This activity also helps students to better understand fraction and decimal equivalencies.
When my students first enter my room, I want them to know that they are respected and cared for - I put these signs up around the outside of my door as a visual of this.
You may edit the font and color to best fit your needs.
I use this assignment as an exit ticket for our study of the 4 major Chinese Dynasties. Students respond to the writing prompt: "Which of the dynasties do you believe was most successful? Give three reasons to justify your choice." I have included an outline and a rubric for students to follow when creating their draft.
C.U.B.E.S. is one of the acronyms used for teaching students problem-solving skills in Math. This handout includes the acronym/description, practice questions, and a quarter-page size poster of the acronym for students to keep in their Math binders.
