Most of my experience has been in special education--Special Day Class and Resource Specialist Programs K-8. Then I made a major change and enjoyed teaching 1st and 2nd grade for several years. I've had wonderful opportunities to work with new teachers as a mentor teacher, as a visiting educator for the county office of education, and as a consultant for CORE, Consortium on Reading Excellence.

In the first weeks of school, it is valuable to have tools to quickly assess your students’ skills. The information I get from these math assessments informs my instructional planning and tells me which students are going to need more support right from the beginning! Does it drive you crazy when a student says, “I’m finished with everything. What do I do now?” Here is the solution … and it is purposeful, standards-based, independent work! Standard practice formats can be the “go-to-activity” when students have finished other assigned work for the day. Alphabetical Order Templates© are an effective tool for independent, standards-based practice of alphabetizing skills in 1st through 4th grade. The templates are designed in three formats: for 12 words, for 18 words, and for 27 words. For each format there is a word sheet and a student form—students cut apart the words on the word sheet, arrange the words in alphabetical order, and then glue them to the student form. Once students learn how to use these templates, this independent activity can

Teaching style

Good instruction means my weakest students are progressing without being overwhelmed ... and my most advanced students are continually being challenged! My style requires creative materials that motivate all of my students to work systematically toward mastery of critical skills ... with flexible scaffolding ... at their own level, and at their own pace.
