A novel study done with a mixture of charts and essay-style questions to engage students in different ways. Recently used for a grade 10 level two course, I feel like it would also be a great fit for grade 9 or 11.

I have divided up the novel into four equal parts and have provided a quick "who, what, when, where" matching quiz assessment for readers. I like to do this when students are completing a self-directed novel study for me to ensure they are reading the piece and to see their basic understanding. This novel I will be using with my grade nine students, but can easily see it fit in with some grade ten and eleven readers as well. I believe some of the lower readers may miss the subtle connections wit

Challenger Deep By Neal Shusterman is my new obsession! A beautiful piece about mental illness, family and being a teenager. I have created 42 questions that hopefully push students to consider the important metaphors, symbols and connections between fantasy and reality. I would also add the great questions included in the back of the novel as they were very helpful.

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 8 years in the middle/junior high school level. I have primarily taught English Language Arts but I have also taught social studies.

Teaching style

I like students to be able to push themselves, create challenges and feel good about the work they are doing. Although I do use themed units for novel studies, I like to do a poetry and short story unit that is structured and has students completing similar assignments. I like to give students choice so that they will own their own learning and try to exceed their expectations.

My own education history

I have a degree in English with a minor in business and Asian Studies as well as a teaching degree.
