I have divided up the novel into four equal parts and have provided a quick "who, what, when, where" matching quiz assessment for readers. I like to do this when students are completing a self-directed novel study for me to ensure they are reading the piece and to see their basic understanding. This novel I have used for both my grade eight class and grade seven class, but can easily see it fit in with some grade nine readers as well. I believe some of the lower readers may miss the subtle co

This is the complete unit! I have included four assignments (found poem, fact file, character "sketch", and playbill) that have students focus on different aspects of short stories with rubrics. Two comprehension reading assignments, two comprehension quizzes, definitions and a list of possible short stories. This unit provides a balance between engagement and comprehension.

Getting student’s to consider theme, characters, tone, mood etc. can be difficult when all they look at is the plot. Best way to have them look for the true meaning of a piece, feelings of a character, tone of a story by allowing them to compare it to music. Middle school students love their tunes and getting to create a sound track will get them talking! They need to justify why they are choosing the songs which not only helps them think about their choices, BUT it has them provide proof. H

Need your students to write a short story? Looking for something that will get them excited about it? Creating a graphic short story is often the trick! This assignment will have students plan and individually write their own short story on a topic of your or the class' choosing. They use short story language and are able to put those terms to use. When they are done that portion of the assignment they pair up with someone else and create a graphic short story for one of their pieces. Grea

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 8 years in the middle/junior high school level. I have primarily taught English Language Arts but I have also taught social studies.

Teaching style

I like students to be able to push themselves, create challenges and feel good about the work they are doing. Although I do use themed units for novel studies, I like to do a poetry and short story unit that is structured and has students completing similar assignments. I like to give students choice so that they will own their own learning and try to exceed their expectations.

My own education history

I have a degree in English with a minor in business and Asian Studies as well as a teaching degree.
