I have divided up the novel into four equal parts and have provided a quick "who, what, when, where" matching quiz assessment for readers. I like to do this when students are completing a self-directed novel study for me to ensure they are reading the piece and to see their basic understanding. I use this in my grade eight independent novel choices unit with books like The Marrow Thieves, Counting by Sevens and The Knife of Never Letting Go.
