This 3rd grade rounding resource includes EVERYTHING you need to teach rounding using tricks! This is my own trick called "screaming mimmies" that I invented several years ago to help my kids who struggle with place value at the beginning of the year. It is foolproof and works with every single number you need to round. In this rounding using screaming mimmies method, there are activities included for rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 but the method will work for any number at all! This aligns with 3.NBT.1 and 4.NBT.3.

**I highly recommend teaching rounding first using a hundreds chart, place value, and the number line before introducing a method like this.**

I use this method with my students AFTER we have learned all of the traditional methods to round numbers. Some of my students who struggle with rounding on the number line or the hundreds chart are easily able to pick up rounding after they learn this method.

✅ROUNDING MINI LESSON

I teach you what the screaming mimmies method is all about! I give you examples and the exact way to teach your students to use this method in your classroom.

✅10 ROUNDING WORKSHEETS

The 10 rounding worksheets include rounding to the nearest 10 and rounding to the nearest 100. The first 6 worksheets walk students through the screaming mimmy method. There's also a review worksheet that I like to give students to check their knowledge at the end of the lesson.

✅ EMOJI MATH SORT

This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the answer is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong answer was used, the students put a frown on top of the task card. 48 cards are included in the game.

✅ROUNDING SORT

This is a simple sorting game. Students pick up each screaming mimmy and choose which house it lives in based on what it rounds to.

✅ROUNDING GAME #1: CATCH THE SCREAMING MIMMIES

Students play this game like a card game. There is a game board included. Students pick up cards and round the number on the card to the nearest 10. They then write the screaming mimmies number on the correct column. Play continues till all cards are gone.

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A ROBOT GAME

Each player gets a background to build their robot on. Playing cards and item pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your robot. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items on their robot wins!

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:

• TEKS 4.2D: round whole numbers to a given place value through the hundred thousands place
• TEKS 4.4G: round to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000 or use compatible numbers to estimate solutions involving whole numbers
