This 2 step word problems unit includes EVERYTHING you need to supplement teaching 3rd grade multi-step word problems. WHAT'S INCLUDED?
✅2 STEP WORD PROBLEMS MINI LESSON
This two step word problems unit also includes a mini-lesson or interactive notebook page with photos showing you how to help students glue the notes into their notebooks. This gives students something to reference when they get stuck or need help while doing homework at home. Students practice solving multi-step equations problems in this mini-lesson.
✅10 MULTI-STEP WORD PROBLEM WORKSHEETS
I created this unit to help my students better grasp 2 step word problems with ten worksheets that help them practice solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations that have multiple steps. There are 2 step addition and subtraction word problems and 2 step multiplication and division word problems included in the worksheets. There are also questions where students may use (example) multiplication and addition or division and subtraction together in the same problem.
✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES
Students look at four different work samples for 2 step equations and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.
✅GAME #1: TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
You are trying to get to the football stadium across town! The problem is...TRAFFIC! Everyone puts their car at the start and each time they solve a 2-step word problem, they get to randomly pick up a traffic light card. If they get a red light, they do not get to move forward. If they get a yellow light, they get to move forward one space. If they get a green light, they get to move forward 2 spaces. The first person to make it through all of the roads to the football stadium wins the game! There are also chance cards thrown in to spice up the game! They may help the player or send them backwards! Answer key included.
✅GAME #2: LOST IN THE WOODS
Oh no! All of the students got lost in the woods. Each kid needs to find the sign that will lead them back home correctly. When you solve each multi-step word problem, you will know which sign to match each kid with. Answer key included. Great matching or partner game! This includes two step multiplication and division word problems and two step addition and subtraction word problems.
✅ GAME #3: BUILD A SOCCER FIELD GAME
Each player gets a background to build their soccer field on. Playing cards and soccer pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your soccer field. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items on their soccer field wins!
✅ GAME #4: WHOLE CLASS GAME
I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc). Problems include 2 step word problems and multi step word problems.
It's perfect for students in third grade or who need remediation in fourth grade.

- Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:
- TEKS 3.4A: solve with fluency one-step and two-step problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction
- TEKS 3.4B: round to the nearest 10 or 100 or use compatible numbers to estimate solutions to addition and subtraction problems
- TEKS 3.4K: solve one-step and two-step problems involving multiplication and division within 100 using strategies based on objects; pictorial models, including arrays, area models, and equal groups; properties of operations; or recall of facts
- TEKS 3.5A: represent one- and two-step problems involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers to 1,000 using pictorial models, number lines, and equations
- TEKS 3.5B: represent and solve one- and two-step multiplication and division problems within 100 using arrays, strip diagrams, and equations
