Description

During this tutorial, students will read and navigate their way through animations, review questions, and various diagrams to learn the basic patterns of genetic inheritance as discovered by Gregor Mendel in a unique and easy to follow manner. This is NOT a simple PowerPoint presentation where students are shown bullet point main ideas. This is a completely interactive tutorial that requires student answers in order to proceed.

Students will begin with an introduction to genetics. They will progress their way through the work of Gregor Mendel, onto the mathematical tools called Punnett squares, and then finish as they play the role of a genetic counselor to help two families with a history of cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease.

This download includes 4 files:

1) The interactive PowerPoint tutorial

2) Student worksheet (pdf format)

3) Student worksheet (Word format)

3) Answer key (pdf format)

Common questions I have been asked:

1) Can Chromebooks and Google Slides run this tutorial? The answer is "probably not." I created the tutorial using Microsoft PowerPoint, which is simply more powerful than Google Slides. Much of the interactivity that I created in the tutorial will be lost. Most of the animations that I created will not work. I wish there was a better answer.

2) How do you use this tutorial in your classroom?

- option A: Place the tutorial on your school's LMS for your students to access. My school district uses Google Classroom. So I simply upload this tutorial into Google Classroom and my students can access the file from there.

- option B: Gather a collection of old USB/thumb drives. You can then save the tutorial onto the USB drives and hand them to students as needed.

3) How did you obtain a class set of USB/thumb/flash drives?

Some of the USB drives I purchased years ago for my own needs. However, many were donated by colleagues as many people have extra USB drives cluttering up their drawers at home. A few were donated by students who had extras at home. Just ask around and I bet you can accumulate a small collection.

I have many other Interactive Tutorials. Here are links to my others:

Yeah Powerpoint and Google Slides are not very compatible. You can try to install an old Microsoft program called “PowerPoint viewer” onto the Chromebook. That might help. Glad you still made the lesson work.

I tried using it as a PowerPoint presentation, but when I pressed F5, nothing happened. It seems like the animations aren’t working. I'm using a Mac—maybe that’s the issue? I understand that Chromebooks and Google Slides won’t support it, but I was hoping it would work if students opened it in PowerPoint. However, when I tested it, it didn’t work. Any advice would be appreciated!

The age ol' battle of Mac vs PC. If you have PowerPoint installed on a Mac computer, I would hope that the slideshow should work. That said, I guess I am not 100% sure as there are always conflicts between Mac and PC's

An idea would be to simply start the slideshow from slide 2. This would bypass the "press F5 to start" slide.

If you cannot get it to work, feel free to email me at

kkobe@bhusd.org

and I can try to better help you that way.

The interactive aspect of the PowerPoint kept my students engaged. They really learned a great deal from this. When filling in the punnet squares for other activities they caught on very quickly because of the PowerPoint.
