Description

A 4-page unit test product (with 4 pages of answer keys) worth 60 points designed for upper middle school and lower high school physics students to assess understanding of forces and Newton's Laws of Motion. Topics include: what is a force, types of forces, contact vs. non-contact forces, newtons, free body diagrams, balanced and unbalanced forces, calculating net force, friction, weight vs. mass, Newton's 1st law, inertia, Newton' 2nd law, F=ma, Newton's 3rd law of motion, and action and reaction force pairs. The test has been designed to take the average science student 35-45 minutes to complete.

Concepts Addressed in This Test:

  • What is a force?
  • Types of forces (e.g. gravity, normal, friction, buoyancy, etc.)
  • Contact vs. non-contact forces
  • Measuring forces (newtons)
  • Free body diagrams
  • Balanced and unbalanced forces
  • Net force
  • Friction
  • Weight vs. mass
  • Newton's 1st law of motion (law of inertia)
  • Newton' 2nd law of motion (law of force)
  • Newton's 3rd law of motion (law of action and reaction)
  • F=ma word problems
  • Applying Newton's laws of motion to stationary and moving objects

Test Format:

  • All of my tests follow a similar format and are divided into the 3 sections as summarized below:

Part A: Knowledge: (~70% of the Test)

  • Questions that involve simple recall of facts from the unit
  • Typical questions include modified true/false, fill in the blanks, definitions, summary tables, short answer
  • Multiple choice questions about general unit concepts
  • Short answer questions on light, primary vs. secondary colors, etc.

Part B: Skills: (~20% of the Test)

  • Questions that involve performing particular skill(s) taught during the unit
  • Typical questions involve analyzing graphs, drawing diagrams
  • Drawing ray diagrams for concave and convex lenses, etc.

Part C: Application: (~10% of the Test)

  • Questions that involve using prior knowledge and applying it to a brand-new situation or problem
  • Explaining why convex lenses are used to make enlarged images, etc.

Downloadable in 2 Formats:

  • This product comes in 2 formats: a static PDF document and fully-editable WORD document
  • Download the full PDF preview to see EXACTLY what you are getting!

Other Test Features:

1. Linked to Unit Documents

Each of my tests are linked to two supporting documents. Firstly, a Unit Overview & Key Words document that I distribute at the start of the unit, which introduces main ideas, essential questions, skills, vocabulary terms, and relevant resources for the unit of study.

Secondly, a Unit Review document that I distribute 3-4 days before the test that helps students review the main concepts of the unit. The test is designed so that some questions are similar, if not exact copies, of questions found on the Unit Review. In this way, students that complete the Unit Review and check their answers should directly benefit from their efforts!

2. Student-Directed Post-Test Analysis Section

All of my tests feature a Post-Test Analysis box on the first page. After receiving their graded test with the overall score, students are then instructed to calculate their % score for each of the 3 sections listed above. This allows students, parents, and teachers to breakdown student performance into (1) content recall; (2) skill mastery; and (3) application of knowledge. There is also a designated place for a parent signature, if desired.

3. Hidden Instruction for Bonus Points!

Each of my tests contains a hidden instruction that rewards students who read the test carefully and follow instructions with 1 bonus point. For example, there may be a hidden instruction at the end of a word problem that says, “Draw a happy face to the left of your name for one bonus point”. In my experience, students love to search for these on my tests, as it is a quick and clear reward that is based on good test-taking habits. At the same time, it encourages students to read the test document thoroughly. Everyone benefits!

4. Complete Color-Coded Answer Key

All of my tests feature a complete answer key that can be used to grade the test but also to show to students after they receive their graded test documents back. My answer keys are designed to be specific, but offer grading flexibility on longer answers. Since the test document is a Word file (.docx), the answer key is fully customizable if you wish to make it match your own curriculum more closely.

Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
