Students will create a creative abstract art project that helps build understanding of the connection of percents, decimals, and fractions with a denominator of 100.

A Trip to the Market- Adding Decimals and Finding Percents
In this activity, you will need to provide students will magazine ads that you may find as you walk into a grocery store. Through this project, students will choose items to make balanced meals and will add the totals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a grand total. This provides students with multiple practice with adding decimals in the form of a dollar amount. A challenge allows students to find a percentage to add on tax and to apply a discount with a coupon.

Fraction & Decimal Zoo 4th/5th Grade Authentic Assessment
This Authentic Assessment/Project is designed to help students increase their understanding of fractions, decimals, area, and place value.

You have been hired as an architect to design the new zoo coming to Statham, Georgia. You must draw the blueprints to ensure that the zoo and all of the cages have the right dimensions. It will be vital to the survival of all of your animals that you carefully select the space needed for each animal’s living space.

Students are required to make 7 statements involving the real world in which they use a fractions, decimal, and percent. Then they draw a picture to decorate it a bit. It uses one sheet of paper folded in 8 parts. An example, along with ideas, are included in the project description.

Newspaper Ad Project, Area, Percents, Proportions
Hands on activity to reinforce measurement skills and area calculations. Students calculate area of news articles and advertisement using a page from the newspaper and determine the percent area that is advertisement versus news articles. Students only need a ruler and a page from the newspaper to complete the activity. A blank table is provided for students to tabulate their results.
This activity is perfect for independent or group work, and could also be used for a sub plan.

Fractions and Decimals Model Project - Common Core
In this activity students create a garden on a 10 x 10 decimal model, and have to identify the parts of the whole for each vegetable as a fraction, decimal, and percent. Common Core aligned. Shopping Spree Project: Calculating Percent Discounts by Multiplying Decimals
I use this project during our multiplying decimals unit. Students apply their knowledge of decimals to calculate the percent discount on items at a store. Students create posters for their store and choose items to sell along with the price and percent discount. Other students can "buy" their items at a discounted price by calculating the percent discount. A rubric and practice assignment are included as well that I use to practice this skill.
