Exemplar Math Problem Solving Journal
Based on a problem solving chart I received at a workshop, I created a journal/notebook style guide to help students fully explain the process of solving an exemplar.
It is Microsoft Word, so you can edit it to fit your students!
It includes:
UNDERSTAND the problem: "I have to...."
THINK of your plan: "I will... (use this strategy)
SOLVE the problem: "Here is my work."

Using Math Fact Songs to Solve Division Problems
Students are able to solve division problems (e.g. 12âž— 2 = 6) through song. Students can sing the songs and solve the problems simultaneously. Mastery of this skill will help students comprehend multiplication and division fluency simultaneously. Fact fluency through song will reduce cognitive load. State testing is easier when students know their math facts. Proficiency with basic math facts will reduce frustration and save students processing time.

Watch Your Step - A Math Problem Solving Plan
This is a strategy that I use with my 4th and 5th grade students to help them break down and understand math word problems. It's a complete PowerPoint that can be edited. The second slide, explains all of the steps. After which, the answers are stated in PROCESS format. Students must match the steps performed with the process, not just stated numerical answers.

This handout gives explicit, step-by-step directions for solving one-step word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Blank Template to use with Polya's Four Step Problem Solving and Math Strategies
Three pages with lots of space to show the thinking needed to solve word problems. Each step reminds the student what parts of the process need to be explained by him/her. Explaining the steps to employ and in the order needed hearkens back to the scientific method and the explanation of procedures. Students will make this connection with practice.
