My name is Mr. Poole. This math lesson revolves around aestheometry, the art of making straight lines appear as if they curve. In this lesson, students use a ruler, compass, pencils, and card stock to create a unique design using a needle and thread. In this project, students will design a geometric garden, calculate area and perimeter of each of the shapes in their garden, and then decide what they will put in their garden, and cost it all out using the internet or sheets you have printed off from the internet, and/or local sale papers. Depending on their level, they may calculate volume as well (if they decide to use mulch, gravel or other bedding at a certain thickness. Travel Project
Fun, independent travel project integrating math and geography allowing students to use math skills learned throughout the year to plan a week long vacation out of the country. Students will use addition, multiplication, division, solve for elapsed time, number forms and more.
This project could also be used as a beginning of the year project for 5th graders or end of the year math project for 4th graders..

Area & Perimeter Project: Build a House
This project has students designing their dream home! They must design and draw their home, with whatever crazy rooms they want (there is a minimum set for the project). When they are done, they are to find the area and perimeter of each room, then, using ads from the hardware stores, select flooring and find the cost of flooring for each room. This project has students using graph paper, adding, multiplying, and finding area and perimeter of rectangles and squares.

This project asks students to write a business proposal for a bank to look at to decide if the bank wants to fund it. Students brainstorm, calcualte expenses, caluclate profits and decide on the amount of money they would need to start their business(es). This is a version of the classic pencil and paper game with a multiplication twist. My students love this game. The students take turns connecting the dots. The student that connects the fourth side gets to answer the question.

Chocolate Math: Averaging & Graphing Project Gr 1-5
Tasting various samples of chocolate, students score on flavor in four areas, add them then divide by four for an average. Totals data is transferred to a data sheet and then used to produce a class bar graph. All worksheets included with directions, as are Masters for the transparencies to use for class bar graph.

Fantasy Football Project
This project focuses on multiplying, dividing, and adding decimals. It's a project that has a specific scoring system and based on NFL stats the students calculate and record the data. The students are required to create a bar graph to represent each drafted player and their weekly scores.

Pattern Block Ratio Projects
This is a simple, yet very engaging activity that you can use to enhance your students' learning of ratios and ratios in simplest form. It uses the typical pattern blocks that you see in most classrooms, yellow hexagon, red trapezoid, etc...and it allows students to get in groups and create whatever they'd like. I've had students create Minion replicas, flower gardens, houses, words, and even cars out of these pattern blocks and they are amazing!

This division project was created to allow students to practice 1 to 2-digit divisor division skills in an engaging way by designing their own poster designed around a word problem they created. It is a great way to asses the different skills taught for fifth grade division. Students love to present their projects!

This project will require students to use data found online as well as data provided in the project. Students will create a stem-an-leaf plot, bar graph, double bar graph, and back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot. In addition to creating graphs students will answer questions about the data dealing with mean, median, mode and range and percent questions. This project uses hands-on math skills. The students design and build their own castles out of popsicle sticks and glue, as well as earn "money" towards purchasing additional materials by completing math worksheets (not included).

Integer Number Lines
This is a simple integer number line set. On the first line are the numbers 0 to 60 (by 2). The second line are the numbers -30 to 30 (by 2). On the last line are the numbers -60 to 0 (by 2). There are many number-line generators out there, but all want to do one type of line multiple times, so I just created my own and thought it would be good to share!

Project: Color By Number
Students will create their own color by number activity using the editable directions included. The directions provide a checklist for the skills that need to be included in the project. An answer key is also required. My students LOVED this project which we used to review skills from the first part of the year after winter break, especially when they got to exchange color by number activities with classmates, providing for a fun time of solid math practice.

The Spend 1 Million Dollars Project is a project students do at home over a course of three weeks. Parents may help the students so it will appeal to various grade levels. Feedback from parents and students are very positive. The project has gone through several adaptations and is pretty easy to follow.

This is a project asking student to categorize the counties of North Carolina by their beginning letter. The students are then asked to write the decimal and fraction that corresponds with each letter. Great correlation of Social Studies and Math and since there are 100 counties in NC, it make writing the decimals very easy.
