Are you looking for a first day of school math activity that will help your students review what they learned last year, or do you want a fun project that will get them hooked on math starting on the first day? Luckily you don't have to choose because this project does both, and it differentiates to the top, middle and bottom of your group of learners! This beginning of the year math assignment incorporates numbers (and computation) into a page about their own lives. It's a great "getting to

Do your students need practice estimating to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, or hundred thousands place? My favorite way to get kids practicing is to make a game out of it, and there are 5 levels of this one game! All you need is some dice for each per partnership, and the children can roll their own numbers to estimate. It also sets parameters for which place they should estimate to. A Google Slides version is now included.Possible Uses:✅ Use one level with your whole cl

Long Division with Remainders Matching Game

This long division game will help children practice visualizing division with remainders. Learning the algorithm for long division can be tedious. Some students follow the steps without really grasping the concept of what division is, or why we divide. This division math game focuses on the real world application of division to help students understand what it really looks like. UPDATE! This set now includes 2 levels of numbers! The red set has smaller numbers (divisors up to 5 and divi

Are you new to teaching fractions on a number line? I felt like this was a big switch in my instruction and I didn't have enough fraction number lines for my students to practice on. For many of my fourth graders, having them draw number lines was too time consuming and confusing to be worth it, so I made my own! This set of four number line worksheets start out basic, and move into the more challenging. Students practice counting to determine the numerator of each number line (each workshee

Equivalent Fractions Game: Trading Fractions

In this game, children will learn about equivalent fractions (fractions with unlike denominators) by making "Fair Trades." All the children will start out with a jumble of fractional pieces, although they all add up to the same length (1 whole strip). If all those pieces were rearranged, you would have a strip of halves, another of thirds, sixths, eighths, and twelfths. But in order to get all like denominators, they are going to need to trade with other children. The trick in this a

Power of Ten Place Value Card Game

This is a simple, fun card game that will help reinforce the concept behind the place value chart for your fourth graders. I developed this game because my fourth graders were having a hard time explaining WHY we regroup, even though it's something we practice daily on a place value chart. This game isolates the skill of multiplying by 10 or 100 and finding the resulting place value. This game has 3 levels (places to the millions, ten thousands, or hundreds) to help you differentiate for studen

About the store

Experience

I have taught fourth grade for 9 years in public school and third grade in a charter school for 3 years. Prior to my full time teaching career I was a paraprofessional for a teacher of the deaf for grades 1 and 2 for a year, and a preschool teacher for 2 years.

Teaching style

I am pragmatic so I can meet the needs of my students. I teach my fourth graders about working in groups so they can learn social skills as well as academics. I enjoy the balanced literacy reading and writing program. Some experts who have influenced me are John Collins and Lucy Caulkins. In math I use a combination of note taking and math games to promote understanding of vocabulary and principles as well as practice for applying skills. My district has also recently adopted the Math In Focus (Singapore Math) program. In science and social studies I teach research skills to enhance students' writing as well as reading to learn new information since.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was awarded grant money that funded the purchase of science materials for 6 classrooms at my school in October of 2012.

My own education history

Bradford College: BA in Psychology, minor in Education; Lesley University: MA in Education

Additional biographical information

I have served on district-wide literacy and science curriculum committees for several years. I have served on school-wide literacy team for several years. I also served as the Second Step (emotional curriculum) school-wide lead teacher.
