Preview of Lipids Lab

Lipids Lab

A lab where students discover the freezing points of 5 lipids and observe the effect of saturated vs. unsaturated fatty acids on freezing point. Requires a hot water bath, ice bath, candle wax, olive oil, vegetable oil, vegetable shortening, and butter. Other lipids may be substituted.
Preview of Fusion and Fission Equations Practice Problems

Fusion and Fission Equations Practice Problems

A problem set where students complete simple nuclear equations and determine if the reaction is a fusion or fission reaction. Students also determine what type of radiation is given off in example reactions. An answer key is available as a free download from my store.
Preview of Evolution in M&Ms Lab

Evolution in M&Ms Lab

Students manipulate a population of M & Ms and observe the effects of different types of evolution. Requires 12 of each color of M & M for each student or group.
Preview of Population Growth Lab

Population Growth Lab

Students will explore the different stages of population growth by studying a population of duckweed growing in a cup. The lab takes one class period to set up, then about 5 minutes per class for at least two weeks. In two weeks time, students should see the duckweed population grow exponentially, then start to level off. Requires living duckweed, cups, and a grow light or a sunny window.
Preview of Drawing Earth's Orbit

Drawing Earth's Orbit

In this activity, students will use thumbtacks, cardboard, and string to draw earth's elliptical orbit. This is a useful lesson for talking about the scale of space and connections between math and science
Preview of Nature Documentary Bingo Boards

Nature Documentary Bingo Boards

Bingo boards with terms like predation, biogeochemical cycle, migration, and camouflage. Whenever students a watching a nature documentary, they play bingo looking for something from the documentary that matches the terms on their board. They must write down what it is they saw in the documentary that matches the term on their board. Document includes 15 different boards.
Preview of Diffusion, Osmosis, and Tonicity Lab

Diffusion, Osmosis, and Tonicity Lab

A lab where students observe the effects of tonicity on potatoes and see how glucose and starch diffuse differently through dialysis tubing. Requires sugar, potatoes, dialysis tubing, glucose, soluble starch, and glucose test strips. Can be completed over two 45-minute class periods on consecutive days.
Preview of Complex Inheritance Practice Problems

Complex Inheritance Practice Problems

A worksheet where students complete Punnett squares for traits that show non-Mendelian patterns such as incomplete dominance, co-dominance, and multiple alleles.
Preview of Wetlands Slideshow

Wetlands Slideshow

A PowerPoint slideshow that covers what wetlands are, the different types of wetlands, and the ecological functions they serve.
Preview of Spectroscopy Lab

Spectroscopy Lab

A lab that introduces the principles of spectroscopy. Requires students to use basic scientific reasoning skills. You will need colored pencils, Project STAR spectrometers (or similar spectrometer), and 5 different light sources ( I use the sun, a computer monitor, an incandescent bulb, an LED bulb, and a fluorescent bulb).
Preview of Exponential Growth Lab

Exponential Growth Lab

An activity where students calculate the annual percent growth rate and doubling time for various countries, then answer questions about what the populations of those countries will be in the future if growth rates do no change.
Preview of Oreo Moon Phases

Oreo Moon Phases

Students use Oreo cookies to show the major phases of the moon; full, waning and waxing gibbous, half, waning and waxing crescent, and new. Requires 7 cookies per student or group.
Preview of Drawing a Cell to Scale

Drawing a Cell to Scale

Students draw a cell to scale on a 1 meter by 1 meter piece of paper. Requires colored pencils, meter sticks, and large paper (bulletin board paper or similar).
Preview of Female Literacy and Fertility

Female Literacy and Fertility

Students create a scatter plot of female literacy vs. fertility rates for several African countries. They will see the importance of educating women in limiting population growth and learn to interpret a scatter plot.
Preview of Identifying Bond Type Practice

Identifying Bond Type Practice

Students use the Ketelaar Triangle in order to determine what type of bond will for between two different atoms.
Preview of Drake Equation Lab

Drake Equation Lab

A thought experiment that uses the famous Drake Equation to estimate how many planets in the universe might contain extraterrestrial life. Can be completed in about 45 minutes.
Preview of Kinetic Energy Lab

Kinetic Energy Lab

A lab where students discover the relationship between mass, velocity, and kinetic energy. Students drop weights from different heights into a full-to-the-brim cup of water and measure how much water was displaced from the cup.
Preview of Introduction to Astronomy Test

Introduction to Astronomy Test

A test that covers the topics of ancient astronomy, planetary motion, and the scale of the universe.
Preview of Proxy Data Lab

Proxy Data Lab

A lab where students learn about proxy data by measuring the height, arm span, and foot length of every member of the class. After creating a class set of data, students create graphs of height vs. arm span and height vs. foot length. Students can learned about R-squared values and decide which measure is a better proxy for estimating a person's height.
Preview of DNA Mutations Practice

DNA Mutations Practice

A worksheet where students compare altered DNA sequences to an original in order to become more familiar with the different types of mutations that can occur to base pairs or codons in DNA.

Experience

I have taught 11 different science classes, including Biology, AP Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science at the middle and high school levels at both private and public schools. I have worked professionally in education since 2005 when I was a tutor for athletes at the University of New Hampshire and worked as a wilderness canoe guide at Keewaydin Temagami, in Temagami Ontario. I worked in outdoor and environmental education for 4 years before moving into the classroom in 2009.

Teaching style

I always try to make my teaching relevant to my students. For example, I don't just teaching about mitosis and the cell cycle in Biology. Instead, I teach my students about cancer, and focus on how problems with the cell cycle lead to cancer. My preferred teaching style is progressive and project-based. However, I am very flexible and use a variety of techniques to engage my students.

My own education history

I have two degrees from the University of New Hampshire: A B.S. in Marine and Freshwater Biology, and an M. Ed. in Secondary Education.
