Time to play the blame game! For their final "Romeo and Juliet" essay students will pick one of the six major character deaths and write an essay about whose fault their death is. This includes the assignment overview, graphic organizer, grading rubric, and MLA format outline.

This includes context articles and a pre-reading worksheet to help students understand the different time period. My students struggled to remember that the play takes place in 1592 and this activity really helped them put it into the appropriate context.

This annotation guide helps students keep track of what happens in each section of "Oedipus Rex" with boxes for characters, major events, words they don't know, the main conflict, their thoughts and questions. For students who have their own notetaking style while reading there's also a blank notes page for them to keep track of everything that happens. This project based mini unit has students identify which classic poet they would most enjoy then working either in groups or independently gathering background on that poet and analyzing one of their most famous poems (options provided). This is an independent reading project that I paired with my Classic Poetry Mini Unit however it can very easily be a stand alone or addition to any poetry units you already teach. The idea is to have students engage with long-form, modern poetry by reading a book in verse. They then needed to give a presentation about why the author chose to tell this story through poetry/verse rather than traditional prose and what they understood the pros and cons of storytelling through verse are.

While I love the trend of Taylor Swift themed rules it was hard to find any suitable for high schoolers. So I made some using some popular and my personal favorite songs. These six rules are the foundation of my classroom for the coming year and years to come!
