Surface Area Project: Rectangular Solids and Cylinders
Students will bring in a box (and cylinder) from home and use it to find surface area (using 2 different methods), volume and to create a net. Students will also review measurement and use appropriate units (squared and cubed).

Tetra decagon Activity: Complex Polygons (Area, Perimeter, Measurement)
Students will use problem solving to first solve the tetra decagon puzzle (using tangrams). This introduces the students to complex shapes. Once they know what shapes make up the tetra decagon, they will find the area of each shape. This will help them to solve the area of the tetra decagon. Next, students will find the perimeter of the complex shape. Not only are the students practicing area and perimeter, but they have to measure the shapes and choose the appropriate formula!

Find missing measurement: Area and Circumference
These worksheets were created to help students with area and perimeter of polygons and circumference and area of circles. Students will be asked to: find the base, side length or height of a polygon when the area is given, find side length when perimeter is given, and find radius/diameter when circumference/area is given.
The worksheets are hand-drawn shapes which are each in their own "box". This gives the students room to show and organize their work.

Pythagorean Theorem on the Coordinate Plane
Students will plot 3 points on a coordinate plane and connect the dots to make a triangle. Depending on the question, students will have to figure out the length of a side or the perimeter of the triangle. Students will have to use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the questions.

Discovering Pi: Circles
Students (working in partners) will measure 4 different cylinders (circumference and diameter). They will discover that they will get 3.14 every time! Students will discover the meaning of pi all by themselves.
This activity will also review vocabulary. A chart is included for students to record their data.

Teaching style
My main goal each day is to focus on the students: to help them learn, understand and use the knowledge they have gained. I try to incorporate into the classroom a hands on approach to math. If the students can see and touch what they are trying to accomplish, the retention is so much higher. I try to challenge the students, and to create an environment in which they want to learn.
