Students will use problem solving to first solve the tetra decagon puzzle (using tangrams). This introduces the students to complex shapes. Once they know what shapes make up the tetra decagon, they will find the area of each shape. This will help them to solve the area of the tetra decagon. Next, students will find the perimeter of the complex shape. Not only are the students practicing area and perimeter, but they have to measure the shapes and choose the appropriate formula!

We all have seen a baseball card! It features a famous baseball player and his stats. The Mathematician Baseball Card Project uses the same principal of traditional baseball cards. They feature a famous mathematician and his/her accomplishments. It will help students become more aware of mathematicians of the past and present. They will research a famous mathematician and create a baseball card. This card will include a picture of the mathematician, date of birth, birthplace, and interesting

This is a quick, simple activity to help the students remember vocabulary for ordered pairs (coordinates). Some of the vocabulary that I focused on was: x, y, input, output, domain, range, etc. This activity only took about ten minutes, but it is a visual way to help (especially the lower students) remember vocabulary words. I put several of the completed pictures up on the bulletin board for display. It really adds creativity to a word wall.

Students will create Vocabulary Flags at the beginning of the year as an ice breaker. They will select a grade level appropriate vocabulary word and define it using a picture and a slogan. This activity can be completed independently or cooperatively. I use this to help select my cooperative learning groups at the beginning of the year. These flags can be used throughout the entire year when the current lesson includes the vocabulary words. It also looks great as a word wall!

Students (working in partners) will measure 4 different cylinders (circumference and diameter). They will discover that they will get 3.14 every time!
