Students will bring in a box (and cylinder) from home and use it to find surface area (using 2 different methods), volume and to create a net. Students will also review measurement and use appropriate units (squared and cubed). This project will enable the students to actually understand the surface area formula. (instead of just plugging numbers into a formula) They will not only use the formula, but also calculate the area of each of the individual 6 faces of a rectangular solid (and parts o

Students will create a poster using sports statistics. Depending on the time of year, you may want to use football scores, basketball scores, data from the Olympics, etc. Students will use the internet (or you can print out statistics for them) to find sports data. The students really buy into this project because it is about something they are interested in - their favorite sports team! Students will display their knowledge of several data displays: line plot, tally chart, histogram and bo

This bundle includes an entire lesson and project on Literal Equations. Students will first complete a lesson on how to solve literal equations. They will use their state’s reference sheet (or the common core reference sheet) to rewrite 15 different formulas. (Several of the formulas will be used more than once to solve for different variables). This worksheet is guided by the teacher and then will turn into a partner activity. This part of the lesson will take two class periods to comple

I teach middle school math, but this activity can easily be used for upper elementary and even high school students. It can even be applied to other subject areas to increase vocabulary awareness. This is a great activity to use at the end of the year. It will help the students review all of the vocabulary words they have learned. Students will be surprised at how much knowledge they have gained through the year. Students will create an ABC Vocabulary Booklet. Each page is a letter of the al

Systems of Equations

This activity applies a real life example of systems of equations. It proposes the question "Which restaurant would you eat at?". Students are given information about two different restaurants. They need to make predictions, write 2 linear equations, graph the linear equations, state the point of intersection (and explain what the intersection means), verify algebraically the point of intersection, and finally decide which restaurant they would eat at using all of the data from the activity.

Students will create a "System of Equations Poster". They will demonstrate their knowledge of creating a table, hand-drawn graph, computer generated graph, solving algebraically (substitution) and elimination. By completing this hands-on activity students will not only practice each of the ways to solve systems of equations, they will also realize that no matter which method they choose, they will always get the same answer! Included in this lesson are ideas to extend this activity, an exampl

Students will choose a month of the year and create their own "Equation Calendar." Students will solve 31 math problems and place them in their calendar template. The 31 math problems (and answers) direction sheet, calendar template, 2013 yearly calendar template and 4 examples of completed projects are included. This project can be adapted for many different math standards. A monthly bulletin board can be created using the students projects. This bulletin board will last all year - because

Linear and Nonlinear Functions This activity can be divided into two parts: teacher guided practice (using the first worksheet) and individual student or partner practice (using the second worksheet). The second worksheet could also be used as a quiz. Students will be graphing linear and nonlinear equations. They may graph the linear equations using a table, x and y intercepts or slope intercept form. They will graph the nonlinear equations using a table. Students will also identify if the

"Graphing 3 Ways Worksheet/Organizer" (8 Worksheets included) These worksheets are a great way to bring together everything the students learned about graphing linear equations. It will review graphing using a table, using intercepts and slope intercept form. By graphing the same equation 3 different ways, the students realize that no matter which form you graph the equation in, you will always get the same line. All 3 graphs should match. (This is also a great way for the students to be a

Students will create Circle Graphs (which they will later turn into hearts) and give them to their favorite teacher in the school. Students will first fill in a decimal/fraction/percent/degree chart using the candy from a box of candy hearts. They will use this information to create a circle graph. Students will then turn the circle into a heart and write a message on the back of the heart for their favorite teacher. The chart (and an example of how to complete the chart), how to create the

Tetra decagon Activity: Complex Polygons (Area, Perimeter, Measurement)

Students will use problem solving to first solve the tetra decagon puzzle (using tangrams). This introduces the students to complex shapes. Once they know what shapes make up the tetra decagon, they will find the area of each shape. This will help them to solve the area of the tetra decagon. Next, students will find the perimeter of the complex shape. Not only are the students practicing area and perimeter, but they have to measure the shapes and choose the appropriate formula!

These worksheets were created to help students with area and perimeter of polygons and circumference and area of circles. Students will be asked to: find the base, side length or height of a polygon when the area is given, find side length when perimeter is given, and find radius/diameter when circumference/area is given. The worksheets are hand-drawn shapes which are each in their own "box". This gives the students room to show and organize their work. The first worksheet is very simi

This is a quick, simple activity to help the students remember vocabulary for ordered pairs (coordinates). Some of the vocabulary that I focused on was: x, y, input, output, domain, range, etc. This activity only took about ten minutes, but it is a visual way to help (especially the lower students) remember vocabulary words. I put several of the completed pictures up on the bulletin board for display. It really adds creativity to a word wall.

Students will create Vocabulary Flags at the beginning of the year as an ice breaker. They will select a grade level appropriate vocabulary word and define it using a picture and a slogan. This activity can be completed independently or cooperatively. I use this to help select my cooperative learning groups at the beginning of the year. These flags can be used throughout the entire year when the current lesson includes the vocabulary words. It also looks great as a word wall!

Experience

I have taught middle school and high school for 15 years. (from basic level to Algebra Honors)

Teaching style

My main goal each day is to focus on the students: to help them learn, understand and use the knowledge they have gained. I try to incorporate into the classroom a hands on approach to math. If the students can see and touch what they are trying to accomplish, the retention is so much higher. I try to challenge the students, and to create an environment in which they want to learn.
