Creating a Smiley Face (Genetic's Assessment with MYP Criterion C)

This is a summative assessment that focuses on student knowledge regarding dominant and recessive genes, along with Punnett Squares and patterns of inheritance. This activity is very hands-on as students flip coins in order to determine the genes of the dad and mom smiley faces. They then use Punnett Squares to figure out the probability of the baby smiley face inheriting certain genes and then design the faces on paper. This lab focuses on using metric rulers, meter sticks, and measuring tapes as students find the lengths of various body parts. This lab should be done in the beginning of the school year and then again at the end of the school year so students are able to see and assess how much they have grown over time. Experience

I am entering into my 18th year as a middle school science teacher in an International Baccalaureate School so I am very experienced in the Middle Years Program. Over the course of my professional education I student taught in the 4th grade (all subjects), and I have also taught seventh grade math, science, health, and technology classes.

Teaching style

I am a very positive, warm and friendly teacher. I love hands-on learning and strive to make as many real-world connections as possible into the teaching and learning process.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was the coach of two second place national winning teams in the science NSTA/ExploraVision Competition in the year 2008 and 2011.

My own education history

I have a BS from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, a MA in Educational Technology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, as well as a MA in educational leadership from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
