Durden Elementary Shenanigans

This is my own version of the sunglasses writing. I thought it would be a great idea to use the sunglasses for my students to talk about their spring break the week they came back to school. They all wrote narratives and loved sharing and getting to draw themselves. Fun!

The students read a text, or teacher reads a text, discuss what author's purpose means and discuss the text. This packet covers all of the first 9 weeks grammar in second grade. I go over this packet with my students during small groups.

Read any turkey in trouble story, I read Turkey Trouble. Then we discussed what they would say to the hunter if they were a turkey to convince them not to eat them. We reviewed opinion and letter writing. I told my students they could be what ever they wanted to convince the hunter, for ex: a doctor turkey, so that they hunter could not eat them because they save lives. After reading Late for School by: Steve Martin, we discussed what we would feel like if we were late for school. We talked about expressing how we would feel, look, think, what we would do. We talked about details, this helps people picture just what we would feeling like, look like, think like...etc. I modeled showing details if I was late for school. Then the students shared their details in this worksheet. I told them I wanted to be able to picture them if they were late for school. Great/fun

This is a great place value practice. I laminated mine so that students could write and erase problems with their dry erase markers. They make up the numbers with the dice as they roll them and then add them together. My students loved adding while rolling dice.

Students will pick a number from the number pile, write it under the place it belongs under, then draw out the number in base ten form, and then write their value. I printed 6 copies and laminated them all so that I could make this a center. Students can practice the place and value of numbers with numbers in the ones place to numbers in the hundreds place. My students loved using the dry erase markers, it was a fun way to practice.

I did this with my students after we read a book about a bully and we discussed what bullies are and how to handle situations with bullies and how not to be a bully. Great for beginning of school year.

I created this inference worksheet for the fifth grade class I student taught in. After having a mini lesson over inferences the students were given this worksheet to show their understanding. It was a successful lesson.

We used these selfie frames to create a Miss Me Selfie writing pieces tying it in with opinion writing. We talked about how special they all are and why they think they are special. So we then talked about how it's almost the end of the year and I will miss them all. So they wrote opinion paper giving reasons as to why they think their second grade class and I will miss them. Students pick a sentence and read it. They complete the chart by writing Xs on the line below. Then they erase and pick another sentence to read and graph. I recommend laminating so that students can erase their work and pick another sentence to graph. This is a fun way to learn how graph on a line plot.

Come up with a simple experiment to do after teaching the states of matter like melting ice. We did dyed and not dyed ice cubes, my students loved this. We talked about what a hypothesis was and how it is worded. We all enjoyed making hypothesis.

My Small Insta Moment is the title of this narrative writing piece. After numerous modeling lectures and several rough drafts and editing, my students got to pick a narrative writing piece they would post as a "small Insta moment" on our bulletin board outside our classroom. When students read chapter books, sometimes it is hard to remember what they read. This worksheet has questions for the students to reflect on the book right after each chapter. This way they can look back and read what they wrote the following day when they are ready to begin a new chapter.

Students pick a card and they draw a shape and then partition it into a fraction and create a fraction and write down the fraction. I used dry erase boards so that they can create many during math centers. They really enjoyed this activity.

Students grab two hands full of colored cubes and count however many of each color they have. Then they write Xs over each color showing how many of each color they have. It is a fun way for students to learn how to create line graphs. I recommend laminating the worksheet so that students can do several line plots and not have to use up so much paper.
