This is a great game for students who are working with common denominators for adding and subtracting fractions. Students roll a die and move through the game board from early elementary school to middle school. On the positive school moment spaces, students roll a fraction die and add the fraction to their point total. On negative school moment spaces, students roll the fraction die and subtract the fraction from their point total. I recommend getting a fraction dice set that offers a die with
This math center activity builds a student's understanding of area and perimeter through creating a blueprint of a student's dream house. The 4-room provided example offers a built-in model for students to follow. If you'd like to change the dimensions of any of the rooms, open the .pptx file and adjust the numbers and content yourself. Once you have the exact dimensions and room names that you want, you can take a screenshot of the house and add it to your .docx instructions file. In the downlo
This is a 2-4 player math game where students decimate each other's planet population with various natural disaster cards. This game emphasizes multi-digit multiplication and 3-4 digit subtraction. In order to play this game, you'll need a 6-sided die, 10-sided die, and 20-sided die. There were students in my class last year who consistently wanted to play this game when given the opportunity. The cards will have to be cut out before playing. It should be noted that there aren't any images on

Students do careful math budgeting and writing about their theme park in this activity that can last as little as 1 class period, or as long as a week. Once they've decided what rides go into their theme park, they write an online review of their park, then calculate if their park makes a profit in the first three days, or goes out of business. The numbers and writing portions are more centralized around fourth/fifth grade standards, but the activities can be easily adjusted to higher levels. A
Students start with $20. They decide what accessories they want to purchase for their person and buy them. They keep track of how much money they've spend and then paste or draw the accessories they purchased onto their person. After they go through this activity, they can then create their own accessories for another student to work with and budget. This activity is flexible for students between 1st and 4th grade. As seen on TV! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr3iris88BQ
I'm not a big fan of tape diagrams, but if a student can understand tape diagrams, they can really nail down the conceptual understanding of fractions. Students don't create their own tape diagrams with these problems. Instead, they critically examine pre-drawn tape diagrams and determine their accuracy when applying them to a word problem. If you want to make any changes to any of the problems, open the .pptx file instead of the PDF file.
Fraction to percentage fluency is tricky. Using tape diagrams and clearly laid out equations creates a clear visual from which students can decipher these interrelated concepts. There are two worksheets with attached answer keys. Both worksheets use sale prices as the avenue for understanding. One uses tape diagrams to illustrate the relationship between fractions and percentages; the other uses a series of equations. Check out this engaging and multidisciplinary 1-week activity. This has math, literacy, and hands-on components. Students can work independently or in partnerships to create their own circus by working with a budget when they hire different performing acts, interviewing the ringmaster for the local newspaper, and constructing their circus tents. The content of the activity is currently designed for students between 3rd and 6th grade, but it could be adjusted to go lower or higher. If you want to
In this activity, students get a budget to build their zoo. Level 1 is $100, Level 2 is $1,000, and Level 3 is $100,000. These are all in Google Slideshow form (.pptx). When you virtually share these with your students (if you're remote teaching), you may want to consider using the technique shown here by the YouTube channel Teacher's Tech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ROGr_57DhI I would also recommend having them make fun Flipgrid videos to advertise their zoos - why people should go there
This activity has students carefully choosing and hiring 5 players for their basketball team using a tight budget, then tabulating stats for their team across 3 games. For each game, they compete against another student who has also created a team. Students keep track of their team points, rebounds, steals, and blocks, using each category in different ways to determine if their team is victorious against another student's team. None of the players are real, and the stats are entirely made up. I'

This is a 2-4 person game where students choose a horse and take turns rolling a 6-sided die, adding onto the number they've already made it to. By laminating the sheets and using dry-erase markers, students can reuse and continue to write their addition sentences for each race on the same sheet. If you want to edit any of the sheets, open the .pptx file in Google Docs.
This is a fairly complicated fraction addition and comparison game best played between an adult and student or between two students who understand fractions fairly well. To play this game, students will need to use the fraction dice purchased at the following link: https://www.amazon.com/EAI-Education-Fraction-Dice-White/dp/B01GKHFV4G/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=fraction+dice&qid=1573489447&sr=8-5This is specifically geared toward students who love football, as they'll try to get down the field using
This read-aloud or independent reading reading story helps students gain some understanding of fractions being part of a whole, and how fractions change depending on what we consider the whole. This is a 5th grade math standard, but could still provide good visual learning for students as low as 3rd grade. To see and hear my reading of it, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U5e1sIGUfcThe download includes the PDF file, as well as the .pptx file that you can edit by opening it in Google D

Get your students to create video word problems like these three! These are ratio questions that also require a good understanding of fractions. Use the three videos in the download, or make your own as a model! To view one of the three videos I've included in this download, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxrpFC8hQoMIf you feel your students need one, provide a checklist for what should be included in their video word problem. The best part about this kind of project is that it accomp
In this activity, students invest fake money in the stock market at the beginning of the week by looking up different company stock prices on Google and purchasing shares from those companies. At the end of the week, students revisit the same stock prices on Google and determine if they made or lost money that week. I recommend making it a fun a competition between student investors.
