Functional Fifth

This is a simple note taking sheet and test that I used during the time I taught my students about main idea and supporting details. We read simple stories to begin illustrating the main idea, then increased in difficulty as we learned. The main idea "table" was the BEST thing! My kids really connected the table top being the "main" and big idea in a story, just like a real table. Written for the upper-elementary grades, this mini-unit on narrative writing includes tons of things! The lesson is mapped out for three different days of instruction (which could easily be condensed or stretched out to fit your classroom). The lessons introduce narrative writing, allow students to play "sleuth" and make up a character and their own narrative story from a bag of props. GREAT lesson that is collaborative and hands-on! All worksheets and rubrics are included.

This activity was created for intervention level 5th graders. This 13 page packet includes 4 total sheets (that can be spread into 2 days) to help students use addition, multiplication, and real-world money skills. It is a great hands-on and involved activity to get your students thinking!

This activity combines football and fun for 5th grade! Students activate prior knowledge of area of rectangles and use their operational skills to compute a quote for new sod for a football field. Operations with decimals usually occurs in the fall for me, so this is a fun way to make decimals and math relevant and fun in football season! Students work in teams to model, solve, and then present their findings to tie in ELA speaking and listening standards.

As an intervention teacher, my kiddos struggle with regrouping rules in addition and subtraction. I created this game/worksheet for them to do in partner pairs as a center. They roll the two dice and write the dots as a double digit number. They roll a second time and record the number then tell me if they must regroup or not! This is an excellent way to review regrouping by getting students to really look at the problems. The included pages can easily be adapted into a subtraction activity. BON

This is a great practice sheet for place value and comparing numbers.I used this for a little assessment after we had finished a unit on place value and rounding. Students draw cards from their number piles (the numbers are a separate download) and order them from least to greatest. Then, they order from greatest to least! There are 10 total comparison problems where they must tell <, >, or = for a set of numbers. Great tool to see what your kiddos have learned or what they need to work on

These number cards go with my Dare to Compare activity! Print the cards out on colored paper and laminate them. You can cut them out and use for various math centers, especially the Dare to Compare activity in my store. Students draw 5 cards and order them from least to greatest. Includes various place values: ones, tens, and hundreds.

This is a simple graphic organizer to compare and contrast winter and summer. It it great to get kids thinking and help them practice comparing and contrasting! It goes along with an activity from my Expository Text PowerPoint (available in TPT store) or it could be used alone!
