About the store
13 years full-time teaching Geography (Earth/Social/Environmental Sciences). Seven of those years as Head of Department. I have been fortunate that my career so far has led to amazing professional development, such as organising field trips as close as the Norfolk Coast and as far away as Yellowstone National Park. In 2013 I was part of a group who worked with teachers in Malawi. In 2017-18 I went on a year-long sabbatical, mostly in the United States. I spent two months in Colorado working with climate scientists at NOAA, and two months in California working at the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco. My experiences were shared via my blog at Geogramblings.com, which also acts as a resource bank for other teachers.

Card Game: NOAA's Greenhouse Gas Sampling Network

Created by
Geogramblings
The monitoring of greenhouse gases globally is an exceptionally important job and is highly logistical. The Carbon Cycle Greenhouse Gases (CCGG) group of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Global Monitoring Division (GMD) have locations all around the world from where their greenhouse gas air samples come from. This network is a major part of the global monitoring efforts, collaborating with a large number of organisations and government agencies. In this pack are a set

Urban sustainability: Ideas from the Solar Decathlon 2017

Created by

I had the opportunity to visit the Solar Decathlon in Denver 2017. I put together this resource to match the part of most GCSE Geography syllabuses that focus on urban growth and sustainability. Some slides are region-based (east of England) and for the AQA syllabus, but the main learning objectives are very relevant for a range of scales and locations. This PowerPoint can be used front-facing; as an independent learning resource or flipped homework task. I strongly recommend you search for and

KS3 Middle East Scheme of Work & Resources

This scheme of work reflects content changes to the KS3 Geography syllabus. The Geography Student Leaders and members of the Geoggers extra-curricular club were heavily consulted and part of this unit has been written up in partnership with them (thank you!). The scheme of work takes a location-based approach covering many different aspects of physical and human geography, but also introduces relatively ‘new’ concepts such as conflict/war and international interdependence (e.g. migrant labour).

Our GCSE (senior) students need to get their teeth into detailed case studies for their exams, so we try to structure resources in a way that allows them to summarise complex and specific information. Here the students use video, images and factual to explore the impacts and responses to Hurricane Sandy. Students explore push and pull factors of rural-to-urban migration in LEDCs/developing countries using a set of mystery cards. It is based on a woman who lives in rural Gambia. The task encourages co-operative and dialogic learning, and then asks them to apply the idea into over contexts. Our GCSE (senior) students need to get their teeth into detailed case studies for their exams, so we try to structure resources in a way that allows them to summarise complex and specific information. Since our school is in Norfolk, UK, we have a great example of coastal management along our coastline, with a wealth of information from the authorities. Here I've put them together in a way that helps students to summarise the info they need. The resources contain citations to the information if y

I remember reading the giant IPCC report on Climate Change as part of my degree, that time spent actually came in handy later as I used the report to rustle up a handout about climate change in the Alps as part of a unit about tourism. I wanted to bring the Haiti earthquake to life in the classroom. Learning about it through textbooks or the news was a little dry, so I did some research on the news and packaged some together to form a resource. I use this for some role play activities, where the pupils act out the picture & caption they have been given, building empathy with those caught up in the earthquake. I then use the touching Hector Mendez story as a "teacher in role" activity, which can get a bit emotional. Please f

Experience

13 years full-time teaching Geography (Earth/Social/Environmental Sciences). Seven of those years as Head of Department. I have been fortunate that my career so far has led to amazing professional development, such as organising field trips as close as the Norfolk Coast and as far away as Yellowstone National Park. In 2013 I was part of a group who worked with teachers in Malawi. In 2017-18 I went on a year-long sabbatical, mostly in the United States. My experiences were shared via my blog at Geogramblings.com, which also acts as a resource bank for other teachers.

Teaching style

Active, sometimes dramatic! (Also have a drama background). I usually like to steer away from using textbooks, but do see the value of them with some learning objectives and lessons. I aim to be very visual, interactive and creative with my resources.I am a total digital geek - and like to use GIS and social media in learning (e.g. Twitter and Facebook).

Awards & shining teacher moments

My work has often been used as examples of outstanding practise within my regional network (Norfolk, UK). In 2013 and 2016 I led the Geography department at my school to the UK's Geographical Association's Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) National Award and Centre of Excellence, in which lesson provision, planning and materials formed a substantial part (see the GA SGQM page.). I have articles published in national educational magazines and give talks, lectures, training and CPD to teachers and trainee teachers nation-wide.

My own education history

A degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, UK (2001-2004). Completed my teacher training in 2005.

Additional biographical information

Proudly transgender, and an activist for environmental, LGBT+, minority and feminist causes. Pronouns: they/she.
