I have been teaching music for the last 30 years in early childhood, elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and collegiate levels. My teaching practice is informed and infused by Music Learning Theory developed by Dr. Edwin Gordon. According to Music Learning Theory (MLT), every child has an innate potential to learn music. Ukulele for the Very Beginner: Read and Strum with Simple Chords
If your students are experts at the down strum, and are beginning to learn one- and two-finger chords, this activity would be perfect for them. Read and Strum prompts students to use the down strum in conjunction with reading rhythm patterns, while practicing one- and two-finger chords on the ukulele. Depending on your students' rhythm reading proficiency, you may want to spend more time acculturating them to rhythm vocabulary and practicing rhythm reading before combining it with strumming.
