What makes a hero a hero? How do we as individuals define heroism in others and in ourselves. How do the essential characteristics of a Hero lead to Heroic action? All critical questions that students will have the opportunity to explore in some way through this inquiry unit.
Students will have the opportunity to create their own characters before analyzing and sharing their inferences about heroism that exists within their lived experience!

This was designed as both a personal inquiry and visual arts learning tasks. Students are guided to reflect on how they self identify, and then to use elements of Line, Color, and Space to design and produce a masks that visually represents that identity.
A graphic organizer and student work samples are provide in addition to assessment success criteria that can all support students in the development of their own Personal Identity Mask.

This learning task was designed as a cross-curricular activity to engage students in both Art and Media. My students engaged in designing a unique magazine cover that focused on combining the personas of two different social justice leaders from different eras. Students are provided the option of designing their covers in a simple program like word or by designing it by hand. This mini-unit was designed for students to critically analyse a current media issue through a Social Justice lens. Students are challenged to explore themes of Inclusion, Bias, and Power while analyzing a controversial ad that was produced by Kellogg.
Critical questions are provided to guide real and relevant student reflection about about social justice themes including modern day power dynamics.
