Landfill Harmonic Recycled Instrument Building Project
After using the movie Landfill Harmonic as a Hook for this project (or video clips about the Paraguayan group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage), my students worked in small groups to plan and build their own instrument using common every day items. This is a little sheet that I print and put on the corner of my students desks with a Timbit on the morning of our test. The kids seem to like it and it gives them a treat part way through their exam.
I used this during our big end of the year achievement tests... you could easily use it for a test or quiz too =)

Year at a Glance Planning Page
I use this to map out a rough plan and timeline of my year. All subjects included, as well as field trips. A grade 3 example is included, however you will type over my text with your curriculum plans.
This is a word document so it is modifiable. It has Comic Sans MS as a font, but you can easily change it if you prefer another favorite font. You can also split or merge cells so that it suits your needs.
Can print on standard paper, but I prefer 11X17 and I keep it folded in my teacher planner.

Regions of Canada Tour Guide Project
As part of our Alberta curriculum in grade 5, we study the six different regions in Canada. I use this project as a culminating activity, allowing students to learn about one region in more detail - perhaps it's their favorite region or maybe one they want to learn more about.

Multiplication Battleship - Up to X6
We have been learning our multiplication times tables and I found many games for practicing all 10 or 12 times tables, but not much for practicing the first half.
So I have created a battleship game for students to practice their multiplication facts up to and include their 6s.

Iroquois Group Project & Presentation
A final project for our Iroquois Confederacy unit. The class is divided into the six different Iroquois tribes. Tribes are given a task which they must research and present to the rest of the tribes.
Once all tribes have presented their information, a Grand Council is convened where all six tribes work together to reach consensus on the issue at hand.

Student Personal Reflections
I use this so my students can self-assess themselves prior to when I do report cards. I use the sentences they write as quotes in my reports card comments. Then my students share their reflection sheet with their parents, during parent-teacher conferences.

Planets Project
Students always love sky science and learning about the planets. This year my kids wanted to do a research project, so they researched each planet!
Some did this on the computer (Google Drive, Powerpoint) and others chose to make creative journal pages with planet booklets. They are given class time for this assignment 90 minutes when they start their research but by the end they can do a planet in about an hour.

Ancient Athens Artifact Game Project
I use this as a final project, to end our Ancient Athens unit. This project has research, writing and representing components. It takes us about 2 weeks to do this project (doing it nearly every day for an hour).
Students are asked to create some kind of 3D artifact to represent either democracy and government or the everyday life of people living in Ancient Athens.

Teaching style
Visual journaling is the biggest tool used in my classroom and is where we do the bulk of our learning in class. I also do lots of mini inquiry projects where students need to explore and create their own meaning and understanding about various concepts - particularly in science and social studies. To culminate a unit, I often create larger projects that ask students to share their knowledge in a variety of ways (research, presentation, multi-modal representation).
I love tools that help me stay organized and lessons that are creative and promote students to inquire and discover their own learning.
