We use this chart to introduce the properties of addition and multiplication. We use the phrases and pictures as clues to help us remember the meaning of those "mathematician" words like commutative and associative. The students fill in the last two columns with examples for addition and multiplication equations for each property. The distributive property is not included on this chart. We save that one for a lesson later in the year.

I use this letter at the beginning of the school year to help my students see that they are not alone in their feelings and to encourage them to share their social and emotional struggles with the group. Giftedness certainly has its positives, but there are some tough "side effects" that gifted students face too. The letter discusses things like perfectionism, being misunderstood, being bullied, and having excessive curiosity. Here is one piece of the letter: "My GATES teacher talks about h

After the students have discovered the pattern of Pascal's Triangle and have constructed their own, we look at patterns within the triangle. Student's will gain practice with prime factorization, multiples, sums, using exponents, raising numbers to a power, etc. They will each choose a pattern to research and teach to their classmates in the second piece of this unit. I love to watch as they begin to see the patterns unfold. It feels like we're doing magic, but it's math!

Students fill out a worksheet and create their own peeps for a colorful, creative, and thoughtful Spring bulletin board teaching adjectives, friendship qualities, and character traits. The worksheet asks for students to determine what characteristic they look for in their favorite "peeps." They must also identify a character in a book that shows this trait and explain why that trait is important to a good friendship. To keep students from using common adjectives, I had them collaboratively cre

I use this poem at the beginning of the year with my gifted students to introduce/practice APEC and to introduce subjective questioning... where no answer is necessarily wrong, unless it is not defended. A trendy, fun, and creative way to introduce students to their gifted program. We've all seen the power of holding handwritten messages in commercials, dog confessions, music videos, youtube videos, wedding announcements, baby announcements, etc. Why not make this trend a teaching and learning tool! Students will learn about their giftedness and present what they've learned in a speechless video- (no spoken words allowed!) They can get creative and have fun holding signs that tell about the

How do we engage our math students? How do we make math engaging while still assessing their learning? How can we afford to make math engaging? This activity or math center involves using recycled and labeled water bottle lids and "activity mats." You could also run off the pages and use them as regular worksheets and the students can write in the missing numbers, but I find that giving them something beyond paper and pencil makes math more engaging. Each skill has two "activity mats" for pra
