I designed this rubric to assess my gifted math students as they chose from a project menu to create a game to practice geometry standards. Teachers can use this rubric to assess a math game designed by their student(s) surrounding any math topic.

I use this letter at the beginning of the school year to help my students see that they are not alone in their feelings and to encourage them to share their social and emotional struggles with the group. Giftedness certainly has its positives, but there are some tough "side effects" that gifted students face too. After the students have discovered the pattern of Pascal's Triangle and have constructed their own, we look at patterns within the triangle. Student's will gain practice with prime factorization, multiples, sums, using exponents, raising numbers to a power, etc. They will each choose a pattern to research and teach to their classmates in the second piece of this unit. I love to watch as they begin to see the patterns unfold. It feels like we're doing magic, but it's math!

This March Madness Basketball Unit is designed for gifted language and math students in grades 3-6. Language arts students have a choice between three research projects while math students construct teams of five current collegiate players and use their statistics to find averages.

To celebrate the new year, present this unique challenge to your gifted math students. The directions are explained on the worksheet. Students will need to use math processes to arrive at the value of the new year number, beginning with their age number and moving through ten steps. Students will begin to see the magic of numbers, patterns, and the power that we have in arriving at the answers we need, sometimes through some trial and error, as they complete this New Years Math Challenge.

Using APEC format, students are asked to answer a reflective question about the Shel Silverstein poem- Where the Sidewalk Ends. I use this poem at the beginning of the year with my gifted students to introduce/practice APEC and to introduce subjective questioning... where no answer is necessarily wrong, unless it is not defended. After researching the innovative ideas that have come from the young and evolving science of Biomimicry, students are give the choice of two final projects. I created this logic grid as a fun, engaging, and memorable way for my gifted students to be introduced to Haiku. Once they learned the word, through this short brain teaser, we began a poetry unit comparing many forms of poetry from around the world.

This is a handout I have given to classroom teachers, so that they can still collect grades from students who are pulled out of their classroom for Talented and Gifted services.
