Hundreds Chart Search for Treasure - Differentiated

This is an activity for students to become fluent with the hundreds chart and develop number sense. This is meant for students to start at a number and complete the missing numbers in the puzzle excerpt from the hundreds chart. For example, the number 53 would have the number 63 below it, 43 above it, 52 to its left, and 54 to its right. This activity is set up for differentiation by having students with different starting numbers. Some students can be using a 1-100 chart while others can

Rural, Urban, Suburban Poems (Smart Notebook File)

This Smart Notebook file includes three poems to help students remember the challenging vocabulary of: suburban, rural, and urban. Three of the slides have images to make a visual connection to the poem and the vocabulary. Each also has just the image with no poem to encourage students to say the poem without the words! In my classroom, we add motions and expression as we read them! When it says "horns honking all night," you better believe that all the students are honking horns! Anyway,

Ladybug Math - Counting On

This activity allows student to practice counting on as a strategy for addition. It helps them get the big number in their head and count up the other number using the dots on the ladybug. It is differentiated by having the first sheet for students that need basic level practice. The second sheet allows students to choose their first number. Some students could be adding 10+6 while others are adding 56+6, while others are adding 1,235+6. With students picking their 'just right numbers,' t

Telling Time to the Hour - Hopping on the Hour Game (differentiated)

This is a game to be played in groups of two. Students take turns rolling the dice and putting a marker on the clock that shows the time with that number as the hour. The student to cover all the clocks on his/her side of the game board is the "winner." There are three different versions to be used to differentiate. Students can identify the hour in clocks showing (8:00, 6:00, etc.), (6:30, 8:30, etc.), or (4:20, 3:45, etc.). This activity can be used as a whole class game or within Math Wo

Animal Problem Solving - 4 Activity Sheets

Mrs Bartmann
These four activity sheets are focused on problem solving in math. They are centered on the following animal themes: cats, dogs, monkeys, and horses. It helps children learn to show their work so that you can see the process of their thinking. These activities would serve as great whole group, small group or as centers/workstations. They could be laminated or put in a sheet protector to be used with dry erase markers. Within a station in Math Workshop, you could differentiate by using diffe

The Same as One Foot - Nonstandard Measurement

Created by
Mrs Bartmann
This activity helps students practice nonstandard measurement and become familiar with the standard measurement of a foot. Students measure a ruler with many nonstandard units of measurement (links, bear counters, paper clips, etc.). A half-sheet is included for students to document their findings. This would work well as a math station in Math Workshop. It could be differentiated by teaching more advanced students to measure to fractional parts (halves or fourths).

Addition Dominoes - Differentiated

Dominos are a great hands-on way for students to practice addition. Computation skills can be more easily developed when students have manipulatives in math, and the dots on the dominos support students in learning addition. This would be a great math station in Math Workshop. It could be used in paper form or used in a sheet protector or laminated for repeated use. DIFFERENTIATION TIP: It can be easily differentiated by having: 1) Some students add the left side of the domino with the right

Social Network Character Profile

This activity allows students to create a "mock online profile" for a character in their reading. This could be done on characters from a book the entire class is reading or within individually chosen books. Students identify a character within the book, the character's friends/acquaintances, the setting, and a "status" that shares the problem or solution within the story. This activity can adapted to be used in a variety of grade levels. It is a creative way of connecting with student inte

This is an activity for kids to create a "mock profile" for an online social network. Reading: Making Connections Assessment

This is a summative assessment that includes text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. Over a three or four day period, I read aloud a book at the start of our Reading block. They can choose one type of connection they would like to make that day. After reading a book each day and having them make a new type of connection, this makes a great summative assessment for making connections within their reading!
