I love sorts. I love the conversation my students have as they move the graphics around. I love the graphics that my students are exposed to. I love the debates! This is my version of the BIRD BEAK LAB. I wanted to design a lab where students travel from 'habitat' to 'habitat'. Each habitat has its own food. Each student has its own 'beak', so they will find that ONE station will yield a good amount of food because it is adapted for THAT habitat. The lab page, where students collect and analyze data, is a front/back page. I included a table of actual birds with uses for their beaks. My students like to see how our labs relate to the real world.

A roll of the dice will let the water molecule know where it will travel next. This activity includes 10 stations and a lab sheet where students will record information, make vocabulary notes (or pictures), and summarize their journey. A student will take a bead at each station so they will end up with a bracelet or necklace marking their incredible journey. Three weeks of (half page) homework assignments. I combed through the 2017 STAAR test and rewrote questions to give my students practice with STAAR-ish questions. There are 12 assignments in all. Readiness TEKS 24 Mastery Cards We all know that a majority of the STAAR focuses on Readiness TEKS. I poured over the released questions and came up with concepts I want every kid in my class to master. Mastery Cards I use these cards like the multiplication drills, where students must show mastery before going on. I make copies and cut them into quarters. One of the new methods of testing our kiddos if they know a concept is by analyzing lists. I put together this two page practice which addresses ten TEKS. I am including two versions. The first version has the number of concepts that should be circled (easier). The second version requires students to read through the list, circle the appropriate concepts, and write the number. Imagine kids working alone, collaborating with a partner, then discussing in small groups.

Kids LOVE a contest. This is a high action lab that gives first hand experience, builds a great vocabulary base, and connects several academic concepts. This is one of my students' favorite labs.
