Here are a few of the things that I do each year to teach my students about the 3 main types of communities people live in and some of their characteristics. This isn't a whole unit, but it has always been a student favorite in my class. If the engagement is high and they're begging for more, you know that you're doing it right! In this fun activity bundle, you have: -Full colored Center sign (if you choose to use any part of this as a center) -Teacher Directions -Community Characteristics -Int

Explaining the events of 9/11 is tough to do, especially when it is to a group of children. This is how I would do it each year. I presented the topic to the kids with guided notes (cloze) and then followed it up with either an online video, read aloud book, or both. Then I would end the discussion and lesson with The Courageous Quilt activity. This was important because the kids took away an empowering and positive message from such a tragic and terrible day in our history. This little bundle

Bringing the real world into your classroom is one of the most exciting things that you can do for your students! When I teach them about persuasive writing, this is one of the projects that the class really enjoyed...mostly because they got to look through toy advertisements! I would bring in the toy and cereal ads from local stores and ask them to look through and circle descriptive words with a small group of friends. You can also bring in some colorful cereal boxes and have the kids brains

One of my favorite things to do with the kids in my class is to allow them to work independently or in a small group on newly acquired skills! It is so fun to watch them work! Here is one of the ways that I would help my kids work on measuring items. I set the activity up by saying how I always measure things before I buy them for my house (bookcases, chairs, etc.) to be sure they'll fit! You post the numbered measuring station cards around the room by the appropriate item. The kids will each ge

This is a fun way to allow your students to practice adding money and making change by letting them pretend to go grocery shopping! There are problems that allow the kids to find the totals of the items on their shopping lists. Then there are some problems that give the kids a chance to make change and see what they would get back when paying the cashier! You can print out the sheets and give them to the students to work on: -independently -with a partner or small group -whole group Or you can

If you are looking for an engaging and fun way to teach your students about subjects and predicates, here it is! This is also fun for a review if your students have already learned this. Basically, this is a mix and match card game where half of the kids will have a blue subject card and half will have a red predicate card. They must mix with their opposite color and create a silly sentence with the cards. After a good chuckle, the kids will record their silly sentence and get ready to mix and

You can teach this in a variety of different time frames, ranging from 1 hour-long session or 4 30 minute sessions. It just depends on what your schedule will allow. Experience

I have been a 3rd grade teacher for 6 years and learned just as much from my kids as they learned from me! I taught an SEI class for 3 of those years and will always be a better teacher for it! I have facilitated many staff workshops about math instruction, using anchor charts, data analysis to promote student learning, etc.

Teaching style

I think that student engagement is the foundation for great education. Engagement is a must for the kids to actually take in the content, strategies, and lessons being taught! I also love for the kids to be in control of their own learning. I like to make things very hands-on and use questions to guide the kids to success. I always emphasize to the kids that I am just a facilitator...that they are the problem solvers. I love to have the kids moving around the room to complete tasks, rather than just sitting with a pencil and paper all day, even though there is definitely a time and place for that too! I pride myself on a strong community vibe in my classroom and treat my students as my equals. My philosophy in a nutshell: Walk in your students' shoes...if you are lost, they are. If you are bored, they are too. If you are truly enjoying yourself, they will too.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Graduated from ASU in 2007 with honors. I was the team leader on my grade level for 3 years. I was a mentor to new teachers at my campus and in my district.

My own education history

I earned my BA in K-8 Education from Arizona State University in 2007.

Additional biographical information

I live in the beautiful desert in Phoenix, Arizona. I am happily married with 2 adorable kiddos. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a very small child. I actually used to make worksheets and activities for my younger siblings to complete at home! I truly love being creative, especially when it comes to crafting and making teaching materials.
