I Am A Scientist is a resource designed to introduce students to real, authentic science researchers. They are diverse, so all student can see representations of themselves in scientists. This worksheet guides students to explore three of the twenty-two people. The assignment can be done again and again. My science department uses it as emergency sub. plans. It is great as part of a Nature of Science unit, for extensions, or to offer students when they are ahead or you need a filler class.
Students create a quality product that explains the geologic time scale to others. Resource includes: background informationassignmenttemplate slideshow for students to fill inrubrichow to make a product to-scale This lesson is great as a final project on geologic time scale or as an extra credit option. Differentiation Ideas: Choose which students use the templateAssign this project as a slideshow or allow students to create any product of their choiceAward bonus points to students who do a to
This basic worksheet compliments the Infographic created by scientist Kathyrn Everson. A lot of the public just does not understand how professional science works. I started my middle and high school classes with this experience and it was very helpful. Enjoy!
Spectroscopy is how we know what elements are in stars. This lab is awesome connecting students to how star science works. It also makes spectroscopy real in chemistry class, physics, astronomy, and general science about the electromagnetic spectrum. My students loved this activity solo and over Zoom. They felt that they learned how we use spectroscopy and have a deeper understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum. This activity is an online simulation version of Star Spectroscopy/Electromagn
Different parts Earth heat up differently. For example, sand heats up faster than water, but water will remain any heat longer than sand. In this experiment, students test the heating and cooling of 4 Earth substances. They then graph the data and answer 5 analysis questions. Includes: backgroundpre-labproceduredata tableimbedded graph paperanalysisA great NGSS lab to show how topography affects weather and heat transfer! I like to do this as a lab that complements Weather Notes or when expl
This thorough packet goes through everything students need to know about weather! This is good for a whole unit. Includes student sheets, answer key, and demo instructions. Sections include: What is meteorologyWhat is climateElements of weatherTemperature Atmospheric pressureWindSolar insolationHumidityPrecipitationTopographyUnequal heatingAir massesMoving heat around EarthCoriolis effectGlobal prevailing windsFrontsLayers of the atmosphereI go through this packet little by little and add in o
In this activity students choose a place they want to vacation and learn about it’s seasons and how it affects the place. Students love exploring (and dreaming) about places they'd like to visit! Assignment sectionsIdentify location, longitude/latitude, identify on world mapDescribe the seasons (Students are reminded that some places of Earth do not have four distinct seasons and are broken into rainy and dry, and the hemispheres will have opposite seasons)How Seasons Affect Life How Seasons
How far are stars from Earth? In this activity, students find the distances of stars and create a model to visualize those distances! Includes: IntroductionPlanning section with data tablesMaterials listProcedureExtension ideasClip art starsTeacher suggestions and picturesThis lab pairs well with the Grains of Rice Lab: Estimating the Number of Stars in the Universe and Build a Telescope Lab so students can have fun learning about Earth's place in space.
A research project on the human development of our understanding of space. Organized for the busy teacher, this project includes: an introductory assignment to help students choose their choicesa list of choices listed chronologically and by categorythe rubricgraphic organizerThis project links science to history through including not just the scientific advancements of people and programs, but the cultural connections as well. There is a lot of room for differentiation and student voice & ch
Teaching about thermodynamics, heat transfer, thermal energy? This product is perfect for you! Use these questions different ways... give a question each class period as a bellworkuse as a reviewgive as a quizas notesProvide the background students need to understand weather and climate, environmental science, or for chemistry or physics courses. This pairs well with - Thermal Energy Vocabulary for Thermodynamics-Albedo Lab-Insulation Lab Analysis-Thermal Mass Analysis
Covers physical and chemical properties & reactions. Includes pH and exothermic/ endothermic chemical reactions. 25 varied questions with answer key included! Great as a quiz, review, worksheet, or homework
This activity uses pony beads (or other items) to represent subatomic particles to model fusion. This activity works well with NGSS with its emphasis on modeling! Part 1: Student manipulate the beads to form "ingredients" and then fuse atomic together. Part 2: Students may continue to use the beads or just a Periodic Table to identify the elemental products of each fusion reaction. Part 3: Students determine what elements would be created if the elements in molecules were fused rather than for
Use the FREE National Geographic MapMaker Interactive to analyze earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as evidence for plate tectonics. It works great for remote learning!Includes: • Student sheets • Answer key • How to use guide How to use Plate Tectonics: Using NatGeo Mapmaker InteractiveThis assignment can be used in many different ways. It is surprisingly versatile! When should I use this activity?Introduction to a plate tectonics unitMidway through a plate tectonics unitBridge between teac
Students design a relay race to practice speed, acceleration, force, and momentum. Includes everything to setup and run the lab, analysis questions, and teacher tips & tricks. This lab is kid tested and always a winner! I use this for middle school physics after we have already gone over these physics principles. It also makes for a good high school physics review. I find it helps students learn because they can connect the math to what their bodies kinesthetically did.
Link literature to science using the selection "On Scientific Method" from Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This straightforward reading allows students to pull out what parts of the scientific method the author is using when fixing his bike. Worksheet includes pre-during-post focus strategies for students. (The selection is available in hardcopy and online)
Graphing and analyzing data is vital to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Math Common Core. This resource uses real data from a Vermont trade school to explore questions related to the Spring treat: maple syrup. Maple syrup is being made right now! This lesson comes with: -Background -Analysis questions practicing different graph types -CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) practice -Answer key with all graphs, claims, and final CER Can be used as graphing and data analysis review, hom
Albedo is the amount of the incident light or sunlight that is reflected by a surface, typically referring to a surface of Earth or other celestial object. It is a principle of heat transfer, Earth science, and astronomy. In this lab, students experiment with different albedo surfaces to measure ice melt. Student sheet comes with: -background information -space to write hypothesis materials -procedure -data tables -analysis questions Teacher sheet includes: -Answer key -Teacher tips & tricks
Students experiment creating a basic refracting telescope and a reflecting telescope without a case. This allows them to move the pieces and learn the principles of what is happening inside both types of optical telescopes. Great for reflection & refraction in physics or astronomy.
Lab comes with background information, clear challenge, student materials list, procedure with diagrams, questions, question answer key, and teacher materials list.
