Cardboard Automata are a playful way to explore simple machine elements, like cams, while creating a mechanical sculpture. Working with simple materials, this activity is easy to get started, and may become as complex as you desire. Check out the accompanying video: http://purcelldesignlab.weebly.com/42-automatas.html

This is a beginning of the year activity. Getting to know your students and gaining insight to the overall trends of your year ahead. This is a two-part task; first your students will find the trends in their table groups (small groups of 4 – 5 students). Second, you will graph the student data on a long poster or pin board. After each of the two tasks, students share three+ truths about the graphs.

All activities take about 15 - 30 minutes door to door. For each of the ~12 week trimesters, the students and I will repeat each activity twice. This schedule will suffice for a 36-week school year. I have left the stretches up to you. However, if you need some ideas… you can find some great ones here - https://samanthagetsfit

My own education history

I've been teaching indoors and out since 2008. Before moving into a classroom I guided and instructed a variety of outdoor sports, including surfing, snowboarding, skiing and whitewater rafting. In 2010 I decided to bring my passion for teaching and love of learning inside by earning a Masters in Education and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential at University of California, Santa Barbara.
