============================
LEARNING GOALS
I can take two fractions without the same denominators and create equivalent fractions from the two fractions so that they compose fractions whose denominators are the same. From there, I can add or subtraction the newly composed equivalent fractions with like denominators to easily find the sum or difference of the fractions.
I can add and subtract fractions with different denominators and represent them using models and pictures.

About the Product
These teacher-facilitated notes will not only solidify students’ mastery of CCSS 5.NF.1 & 5.NF.2 but will do so in a fun way that makes students feel as though they are in a hybrid class of math and art. Even though it is super fun for a math lesson (along with our music videos, maybe the most fun, ever), Number notes do not go light on rigor and depth, and will help lead students toward mastery of 5.NF.1 & 5.NF.2.
The visual aids and geographic models in Number Notes help students to not only grasp the procedural knowledge, but also to dig deeper, shedding light on conceptual understanding.
After the students are finished with the final designs and coloring of their doodle, notes like these make a great addition to math journals, as well as looking terrific on bulletin boards - or perhaps even in a gold leaf frame atop the fireplace.

Common Core Alignment:
5.NF.1 | 5.NF.1.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
5.NF.2 | 5.NF.1.2
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
