LEARNING GOALS
I can gather data sets with fraction units, place the data on a line plot, and finally solve problems based on the information collected on the line plot.
============================
SUGGESTED USES:
- math practice and review
- math journal insert
- eeepening conceptual understanding with geometric models.
- enrichment activity to follow NUMBEROCK math music videos
- teacher facilitated, whole-group activity. (Guided Note-Taking)
- intervention and review,
- Response to Intervention (RTI) Lesson
- math station and centers activity (guided-math)
- spiraling back for reinforcement
- fun SBAC, FSA, or PARCC test-prep feview activity
- hand-out to fast finishers / enrichment
- great for sub plan - easy implementation for substitute teachers
- math activity for students who like to doodle
- notes for reference of learned concepts
- 5.MD.B.2 review
- Arts-Integration
- lesson plan time saver
- making math more fun and arts-based
- no prep activities

About the Product
These teacher-facilitated notes will not only solidify students’ mastery of CCSS 5.MD.2 but will do so in a fun way that makes students feel as though they are in a hybrid class of math and art. Even though it is super fun for a math lesson (along with our music videos, maybe the most fun, ever), Number notes do not go light on rigor and depth, and will help lead students toward mastery of 5.MD.2.
The visual aids and geographic models in Number Notes help students to not only grasp the procedural knowledge, but also to dig deeper, shedding light on conceptual understanding.
After the students are finished with the final designs and coloring of their doodle, notes like these make a great addition to math journals, as well as looking terrific on bulletin boards - or perhaps even in a gold leaf frame atop the fireplace.

Common Core Alignment
5.MD.2 | 5.MD.2.2
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Other Alignments:
Texas | Math TEK 5.9C (Line plots are referred in the TEKS as dot plots.)
Florida | MAFS.5.MD.2.2
Virginia | SOL 5.16 | SOL 5.16a, 5.16b |
UK Maths | KS2 | Year 4 | Strand S2 | KS2 National Curriculum
Australian Maths | Year 5 | ACMSP119 and ACMSP120 | Australian Curriculum
