LEARNING GOALS

I can divide a whole number by a fraction where the numerator is 1. I can also divide a fraction where the numerator is 1 by a whole number.

I can divide a fraction where the numerator is 1 by a whole number.

I can divide a whole number by a unit fraction (a fraction where the numerator is equal to 1).

I can solve real world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division of whole numbers by unit fractions.

About the Product

These teacher-facilitated notes will not only solidify students’ mastery of CCSS 5.NF.7, but will do so in a fun way that makes students feel as though they are in a hybrid class of math and art. Even though it is super fun for a math lesson (along with our music videos, maybe the most fun, ever), Number notes do not go light on rigor and depth, and will help lead students toward mastery of 5.NF.7 .

The visual aids and geographic models in Number Notes help students to not only grasp the procedural knowledge, but also to dig deeper, shedding light on conceptual understanding.

After the students are finished with the final designs and coloring of their doodle, notes like these make a great addition to math journals, as well as looking terrific on bulletin boards - or perhaps even in a gold leaf frame atop the fireplace.

============================

5.NF.7 & 5.NF.7a & & 5.NF.7c Common Core Language

5.NF.7 | 5.NF.2.7

Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions

5.NF.7a | 5.NF.2.7a

Interpret division of a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for (1/3) ÷ 4, and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (1/3) ÷ 4 = 1/12 because (1/12) × 4 = 1/3.

5.NF.7b | 5.NF.2.7b

Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 × (1/5) = 4.

5.NF.7c | 5.NF.2.7c

Solve real world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division of whole numbers by unit fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, how much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 1/3-cup servings are in 2 cups of raisins?
