LEARNING GOALS
I can determine the volume of a 3D rectangular solid by adding up the total of cubic units that can fit into the figure.
I can measure volume by counting all the unit cubes (for example: cubic feet or cubic centimeters) that can fit into a 3-dimensional rectangular container.
I can measure the number of cubic units in a 3-D Rectangular Prism whose length, width, and height are whole numbers. I can apply the formulas for rectangular and right rectangular prisms to find the volume

About the Product
These teacher-facilitated notes will not only solidify students’ mastery of CCSS 5.MD.3 & 5.MD.4 & 5.MD.5ab but will do so in a fun way that makes students feel as though they are in a hybrid class of math and art. Even though it is super fun for a math lesson (along with our music videos, maybe the most fun, ever), Number notes do not go light on rigor and depth, and will help lead students toward mastery of 5.MD.3 & 5.MD.4 & 5.MD.5ab.
The visual aids and geographic models in Number Notes help students to not only grasp the procedural knowledge, but also to dig deeper, shedding light on conceptual understanding.
After the students are finished with the final designs and coloring of their doodle, notes like these make a great addition to math journals, as well as looking terrific on bulletin boards - or perhaps even in a gold leaf frame atop the fireplace.

Common Core Alignment:
5.MD.3 | 5.MD.3.3
Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
5.MD.4 | 5.MD.3.4
Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.
5.MD.5 | 5.MD.3.5
Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
5.MD.5a | 5.MD.3.5a
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole-number side lengths by packing it with unit cubes, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths, equivalently by multiplying the height by the area of the base. Represent threefold whole-number products as volumes, e.g., to represent the associative property of multiplication.
5.MD.5b | 5.MD.3.5b
Apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.
