WHAT'S INCLUDED?

✅MEASURE WITH RULERS MINI LESSON

A mini lesson or interactive notebook page that students can cut out and glue write into their notebooks to reference whenever they need. In the mini lesson, students practice measuring to the nearest inch, half inch, and quarter inch with animals that start at 0 on the ruler and are also in the middle of the ruler.

✅10 MEASURE TO THE NEAREST QUARTER INCH WORKSHEETS

10 worksheets that are differentiated for what your students need! I have included 3 "nearest inch" worksheets, 3 "nearest half inch" worksheets, and 4 "nearest quarter inch" worksheets! All worksheets come with an answer key.

✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅2 REAL-LIFE ACTIVITIES

2 measuring in real-life activities that allow students to use rulers to measure objects that interact with every day both in the classroom and in nature! Give students a ruler, print out the sheet, and your students are ready for some in-real-life math measuring rocks, erasers, and much more.

✅GAME #1; 3 SETS OF DIFFERENTIATED TASK CARDS

A differentiated game that comes in 3 DIFFERENT VERSIONS! Students have the option to measure flamingos to the nearest inch, unicorns to the nearest half inch, or dinosaurs to the nearest quarter inch. These animals can be used in a math center, as a scavenger hunt, with a game board, or however else you'd like! I've listed ideas on how to use these fun animals in your classroom in the unit.

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A PIRATE ISLAND GAME

Each player gets a background to build their pirate island on. Playing cards and playing pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your pirate island. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items on their pirate island wins!

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ GAME #4: RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

This measurement unit is great for 3rd grade math review, making packets, homework, morning work, quizzes, tests, assessments, explicit teaching, remediation for fourth graders, enrichment for second graders, test prep, when parents request extra assistance, and for practice.

This unit was made for third grade students but would work well for high second graders or as a review for fourth graders. There is a color and black and white version included for each game and activity.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core 3.MD.4:

  • Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.M.1.1 Select and use appropriate tools to measure the length of an object, the volume of liquid within a beaker and temperature.
  • MA.3.M.1.2 Solve real-world problems involving any of the four operations with whole-number lengths, masses, weights, temperatures or liquid volumes.
