10 Most Important Words Reading Comprehension

This is a reading comprehension task that is used as one of the AVID WICOR strategies. As I used this in my classroom – I created the following chart to help my students record the words that they chose as their important words. After reading a particular piece of text (could be used in science, social studies, reading, etc.) – each student goes through the text selecting ten words that they believe are the most important words from that text. It is possible for students to select a word phra

Formative assessments are used in the classroom to get a pulse on the learning of your students. Teachers take these quick assessments and then use them to guide and enhance their instruction. After teaching a concept and believing that your students have grasped the knowledge your standards require - distribute this formative assessment to see if students gained the the understanding you hoped they would. I created this formative assessment on a half sheet - and then duplicated it as the same

This is a good resource for students to use as a reference tool when learning about figurative language. I used a PowerPoint to introduce (or review) figurative language. Students filled in the blanks as they learned about the definitions of each. Students could even use a digital device to research these six figurative language ideas to discover what they could plug into the blanks. I would have my students add this chart to their ISN (interactive student notebook) so they could refer to it

This task allows students to read a piece of text and focus on clues that support the author's perspective about throughout the text. Students collect these clues and thoughts in the organizer on the left. They will also reflect on what they believe is the author's purpose and respond with text evidence to support their thinking. They will determine the central idea that is prevalent throughout the text. They will even think about the theme of the text. This structure will allow your stud

This structure will allow your students to think "deeply" about a poem. The tasks that students do will help them to interact and connect to a poem in a way that is often difficult for students. They will respond with their own interpretations about the poem, make inferences about the author, use context clues with new words, and visualize parts of the poem. This could be a great tool for students to work on independently or with a partner. The discussions that students could have with one anot

This chart on pronouns serves as a reference tool for your students. This would be a perfect item for your students to add to their ISN (interactive student notebook) to use when learning about pronouns. This charts includes: * personal pronouns * possessive pronouns * subject and object pronouns * reflexive pronouns * indefinite pronouns ** Students are given examples of these in the singular and plural forms. It is a very comprehensive list of pronouns . . . and great reference tool!

This document supports students' ability to increase their fluency rate over a course of five weeks. Students will be motivated by setting fluency rate goals (in the space at the top) and working towards achieving that goal each week. Students will also be eager to color in their bar graph which visualizes their progress. Tips: 1. Set the timer for one minute to count the number of words students read. 2. A word that misread or skipped is not counted as correct. A self-corrected word can be coun

I saw that one of my figurative language items has been selling almost every day so that made me realize there is a need for quality materials for this. I thought about what I would want in my classroom to help my students practice the skill of determining examples of figurative language. I have collected 58 sample sentences that match one of the seven figurative language categories I have created. Students will work with a partner or in a small group to line up the seven figurative language c

I used this response sheet with my fifth graders when we did a study on Martin Luther King. I wanted them to see the actual video of the speech (on YouTube) and to get them to actually focus on the speech and try to understand his words, I gave them parts of his speech and wanted them to fill in the missing parts. I also wanted them to think about what they were seeing and the message he was trying to convey so I added some additional response questions to allow them a chance to write their ow
