I am currently in my 33rd year of teaching. Most of my experience has been at the elementary level teaching self-contained classrooms, ELA/R, American History, and small group literacy intervention lessons.
I have been an instructional coach in my school district for ten years working with teachers in grades K-12 and in all content areas. Most of my work is with elementary and middle school teachers.
I am currently a literacy interventionist.

10 Most Important Words Reading Comprehension

Figurative Language
This is a good resource for students to use as a reference tool when learning about figurative language. I used a PowerPoint to introduce (or review) figurative language. Students filled in the blanks as they learned about the definitions of each. Students could even use a digital device to research these six figurative language ideas to discover what they could plug into the blanks.
I would have my students add this chart to their ISN (interactive student notebook) so they could refer to it

Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor - Chapter Comprehension
I created this short comprehension check after each chapter so I could check to see how students were comprehending this novel. Each chapter comprehension check has 8 to 10 questions. A couple chapter are combined into one comprehension check.

Author's Perspective - Author's Purpose, Theme, & Central Idea
This task allows students to read a piece of text and focus on clues that support the author's perspective about throughout the text. Students collect these clues and thoughts in the organizer on the left.
They will also reflect on what they believe is the author's purpose and respond with text evidence to support their thinking. They will determine the central idea that is prevalent throughout the text. They will even think about the theme of the text.

Analyzing Poetry - "Rain in Summer"
This structure will allow your students to think "deeply" about a poem. The tasks that students do will help them to interact and connect to a poem in a way that is often difficult for students. They will respond with their own interpretations about the poem, make inferences about the author, use context clues with new words, and visualize parts of the poem.

Pronouns - Parts of Speech
This chart on pronouns serves as a reference tool for your students. This would be a perfect item for your students to add to their ISN (interactive student notebook) to use when learning about pronouns. Haiku Poetry Rubric
This rubric can be used to assess students' performance on their writing of haiku poetry. The same rubric is printed on the top and bottom of this document - so the teacher can make copies, cut them in half, and then score the poems.
The rubric assesses the following:
1. Nature theme
2. Line 1 (5 syllables)
3. Line 2 (7 syllables)
4. Line 3 (5 syllables

Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" Speech Study
