10 Most Important Words Reading Comprehension

This is a reading comprehension task that is used as one of the AVID WICOR strategies. As I used this in my classroom – I created the following chart to help my students record the words that they chose as their important words. After reading a particular piece of text (could be used in science, social studies, reading, etc.) – each student goes through the text selecting ten words that they believe are the most important words from that text. It is possible for students to select a word phra

Formative assessments are used in the classroom to get a pulse on the learning of your students. Teachers take these quick assessments and then use them to guide and enhance their instruction. After teaching a concept and believing that your students have grasped the knowledge your standards require - distribute this formative assessment to see if students gained the the understanding you hoped they would. I created this formative assessment on a half sheet - and then duplicated it as the same

This task allows students to read a piece of text and focus on clues that support the author's perspective about throughout the text. Students collect these clues and thoughts in the organizer on the left. They will also reflect on what they believe is the author's purpose and respond with text evidence to support their thinking. They will determine the central idea that is prevalent throughout the text. They will even think about the theme of the text. This structure will allow your stud

This chart on pronouns serves as a reference tool for your students. This would be a perfect item for your students to add to their ISN (interactive student notebook) to use when learning about pronouns. This charts includes: * personal pronouns * possessive pronouns * subject and object pronouns * reflexive pronouns * indefinite pronouns ** Students are given examples of these in the singular and plural forms. It is a very comprehensive list of pronouns . . . and great reference tool!

This document supports students' ability to increase their fluency rate over a course of five weeks. Students will be motivated by setting fluency rate goals (in the space at the top) and working towards achieving that goal each week. Students will also be eager to color in their bar graph which visualizes their progress. Tips: 1. Set the timer for one minute to count the number of words students read. 2. A word that misread or skipped is not counted as correct. A self-corrected word can be coun

I recently created this rubric for a teacher. She had ideas on some important structures in her classroom and after getting some of her thoughts, I created this rubric. This rubric allows the teacher to assess students in two areas - collaboration and critical engagement. The rubric was built around the following needs: Collaboration which will assess: * Listening * Speaking * Teamwork Critical Engagement which will assess: * Effort * Engagement * Homework Completion * Responsibility The t

Peer Editing - this strategy is used when students are sharing a sample of their writing with a few partners. This tool will help your students be more engaged in the composition sharing because they are responsible for writing down two ideas that they liked in their partner's writing and then one wish or suggestion on how to improve the writing. This feedback allows the student to see their composition from a different perspective and to possibly enhance their writing. The students should th

25 Book Reading Challenge

Teachers in my school district will be embracing the idea of allowing the students in their classroom (grades 3-12) to practice their reading through free choice independent reading during this upcoming year. We have recently been inspired by Donalyn Miller’s book titled The Book Whisperer. Donalyn Miller promotes this idea and she does a 40 book challenge in her classroom. While we see the benefit of encouraging more reading, we are implementing this idea for the first time. Since it is new

This chart will direct students on an independent fluency practice. It allows them to read a piece of text three times and focusing on their fluency and encouraging improvement and progress. Students also have the opportunity to self-assess their reading at the end. This is a very easy tool to use with your students and for them to be successful. You will want to make sure that students have a recording device (iPad, recorder, etc.) so they have the chance to record themselves and then use t

This is a great way to track fluency for the more advanced readers in your classroom. Students will be motivated to color in their bar graphs after each fluency check. Suggestion: The teacher might consider marking the line to note the number of words students have read and then allow students the opportunity to color in the bar graph.

I copied this sheet on colored paper and then cut the stack down the middle lengthwise and kept them handy for each day. I made a small stack at the beginning of the year so they were always ready to go. The design of this make-up work slip is that there is plenty of room to write down any assignments/tasks for each subject for that day. The slip is organized with a place for Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts & Reading. Depending on your grade level, you could have a student "

My students really enjoy reading through Time for Kids each week. I found many opportunities to incorporate some reading and writing using this magazine in my classroom. This particular activity asks students to cut out a picture, graph, visual, etc. from the magazine and then to summarize their learning from this article. It provides students the choice to pick something that speaks to them and then to practice the skill of summarizing. I also teach my students about plagiarism and they pra

A teaching idea: To help my students experience idioms, I created a station/center that included iPads/laptops and the list of idioms. Students would choose a select number of idioms and they would spend time researching the true meaning of the idiom and then reporting their findings. Great use of incorporating digital learning and making it more stude
