GarageBand iOS Instructional Series - Activity 1
This first activity involves GarageBand for iOS and putting a first song together. The song has 3 components, or tracks which can be expanded on, depending on your goals and proficiency of the participants. Tracks can be arranged in any order. After creating a New Song, students will be creating the following tracks: Rhythm track Chords track Melody track Students can use loops or perform their own rhythmic patterns, chords, and/or melodies on whatever Smart Instruments or drums they choose.

Chord Notes Activity is a started activity for those students who are in the midst of learning traditional note naming. It brings in the importance of chord knowledge so students become aware of the triad and the notes that spell the chord. There are three activities with activity extensions on the second page. Irregular Time Signatures with Regular Melodies
Use of irregular time signatures can open a new world of musical opportunities for students, especially budding composers and admirers of improvisation. Typically described as irregular, unusual, odd, or complex, these time signatures have an odd rather than even upper number on the top (numerator) of the time signature.

This activity serves to introduce graphic notation versus traditional notation with common, public domain melodies. These are a collection of 6 basic chord progressions in G major, using chords I, IV, V, and I written for any similar treble clef instruments (e.g., recorders, xylophones, marimbas). GarageBand for iOS has Smart Instruments that allow for finger-gestured chords to be played, in chordal form (with inversions), or in arpeggiated style with the Autoplay feature turned on.

Musical Problem Solving #1 The Missing Chord
The purpose of this activity is to present musical challenges to your students that encourage them to solve a problem through inquiry, preferably with a keyboard or tablet.
This activity is basically chord-based melody writing. You may need to do a lead up exercise with chord-based composition so your students understand this routine.
