In this project students will draw a geometric design and measure the angles. Then, students will label angle relationships, like, adjacent, complementary, supplementary, etc. There is a rubric and student directions sheet included in this resource. This activity is great for ending a unit on Volume and Surface Area. Students compute the area, volume and surface area for shapes and then turn them into Christmas tree ornaments. I have included the nets and shapes that I use with my class. You will need to provide poster board for the Christmas trees and measuring tools. This resource is great for students to do in small groups. I like to have the students figure out the answer together and then justify their answers on their own. This gives students opportunities to see how their classmates solve the problem. The students enjoy doing the problems on large whiteboards and then sharing with the whole class. This resource includes video questions and vocabulary for a Youtube video on the connection between Homebuilding and Mathematics. Two students work with the Make it Right foundation to see how math is connecting to the renovation of houses in New Orleans. The students are shown how math is connected to the building of solar panels and making a cement walkway in front of the home. This would be a great resource for a substitute for a mathematics class.
