Matching Using the First and Second Derivative Tests

This activity is a great way for students to review the first and second derivative tests and describe key features of a function. Students will work in pairs (recommended) to take a function and use the first and second derivative tests to find intervals of increase and decrease as well as intervals of concavity. Students will be given the following: - 10 function cards (A-J) - 10 first derivative test conclusions (colors) - 10 second derivative test conclusions (food) Students will find a grou

Graphing Rational Functions Review Worksheet

The worksheet provided features 9 problems where students are expected to graph the rational function and list the key features such as: vertical asymptoteshorizontal asymptotesremovable discontinuities ("holes")while also providing them with space to show their work and a graph to plot their end result. There are NO slant asymptotes on this worksheet. The second set of problems require students to identify key features of a the graph given and write the equation of the graph based on these fea

Factoring Santa Hat Coloring Activity

This factoring activity includes 3 and 4 term polynomials that can be factored by grouping. The 3-term polynomials all have a leading coefficient greater than 1. Students will group and factor the polynomials to get their answers which will then be colored in to design the Santa hat.
Preview of Quadratic Formula Pixel Activity

Quadratic Formula Pixel Activity

The Pixel Activity is a great review of the quadratic formula. The answers to the quadratic formula will be rational or irrational and simplified but there are no imaginary answers on this sheet. Students complete each problem A-I and match their answer to the pixel shape in the 3x3 grids. They then color in the grid on the 9x9 in order to create the picture shown.

Mild Medium Spicy Walkaround - Integration Rules

This walkaround activity sorts indefinite integration problems from Mild (easy), Medium and Spicy (difficult). The skills and content required for this assignment include: Power Rule Trigonometric Inverse Trigonometric Natural Log Exponential (e) Chain Rule There are 16 questions total with an answer key attached. The file is also uploaded as a Word document for easy editing if you wish to modify the questions. It is a great review for students prior to learning more challenging chain rule prob

Linear Word Problems Self Assessment

This activity is a set of 8 linear word problems that requires students to write a linear model and answer a second question about that problem. At the bottom of each problem the students are required to rate their understanding of each question with a symbol... lightning bolt (I've got this, no problem), a happy face (I did alright, but it might be wrong) and an exclamation point (I need more help!). I like this activity because it allows me to see where my students actual understanding leve

Calculus Derivatives - Mild Medium Spicy Walkaround Version 1

This activity is designed to allow students to practice their derivatives with questions that are tiered from mild (easy) to spicy (difficult) and requiring the most steps, while walking around the room and having some independence to choose the problems they wish to do. You can design the activity to be fully completed, or have the students choose a certain number of mild medium and spicy questions they need to complete. The derivatives include the following rules: Power, product, quotient, ch
Preview of Parent Function Matching Activity

Parent Function Matching Activity

Students will complete a hands on activity matching sets of cards to each parent function. There are 4 different cards for 8 different parent functions including: Constant Linear Quadratic Cubic Square Root Absolute Value Exponential Rational With the 4 different sets of cards: Name of the parent function The function itself The graph A description of each Students will have to group the correct answers together and put their answers on the answer sheet provided using the indicators at the bott

Say What?! - Algebra Vocabulary Review Sheets

The format of the review sheets ask students to describe what each word means, ask what they would "do" or "perform" if they were asked about an operation or to draw a picture to represent it. Ideally you are hoping they can compare and contrast different words like simplify and solve and other words. The file is uploaded in a word document for easy editing and adding/removing certain vocabulary words.

Exponential Growth, Decay and Interest Word Problems

Students will be able to use and distinguish between basic exponential growth, decay, compound interest and continuously compounded interest word problems. The file is in a Word Document for easy editing if needed. There is also an answer key with the set up of each problem.

Partner Box Activity - Solving Quadratics by Factoring

This activity allows students to move around the room and work with 6 different people to complete 6 different solving quadratics by factoring questions with varying difficulty levels. - Each student is only allowed to work with a single partner once - Students will write their partners name that they worked with in each box on the line provided for easy comparison and grading.

Socratic Seminar - Substitution and Elimination

The purpose of this activity is to have students discuss which method is best used when approaching systems of equations algebraically. There is an activity sheet for the students for their work and a teacher page with the guiding questions. The students should be able to discuss and reason with their classmates about each problem with limited guidance and redirection from the teacher. Many students will approach these questions without teacher input, which is the ultimate goal in getting th

Parent Functions Discovery Activity

Students are to use a graphing calculator, or graph a variety of functions by hand. On one graph they will graph different parent function and on the graph next to it, they will graph a transformation of the parent function. Students will then summarize the differences in each graph using vocabulary like intercept, shift, rotated, flipped, ect. in order for them to discover what transformations occur and even guess WHY they occur based on the changes within the function's equation itself.

Exploring Side Lengths of a Triangle - DBA

This is a discovery activity where students will use plastic pieces of various lengths that snap together forming sides of triangles in order to discover the relationship between the side lengths of a triangle and the types of triangles they form, if they even form a triangle. This can be done with different size popsicle sticks, straws or even string. At the end of the activity there are essential questions that students are required to answer, leading them to the properties of triangles they

Teaching style

Discovery Based Learning is what my teaching preference is. Allowing students to take responsibility for their learning and guiding them through the process helps make the content "stick" better than presenting it through lecturing. They also enjoy the various activities and differentiation the DBAs allow.
